2-3 paragraph response. If you were starting a small business, would you prefer that your partner is a utilitarian, an altruist, or an egoist? Why? A meaningful response is needed to at least two of your peers.

After giving this some thought, if I were to start a small business, I’d prefer that my partner would be an altruist. If I’m just starting out, first impressions matter. It would be important to keep the clients as the focus rather than being totally self-serving like the egoist philosophy espouses. While the enlightened egoist philosophy could possibly be viable as well, I feel that a successful business should be customer focused.

As for why I would prefer an altruist over a utilitarian, i would be incredibly concerned about utilitarian monsters that would consume an inordinate amount of my time and resources rather than giving attention to all my clients on a regular basis. I would also concern myself if my partner would be more of a people pleaser than to maintain a more professional manner with which we would conduct our business. Obviously, it is important to have a satisfied and happy clientele, but it is impossible to please everyone in this world. I would not want my partner to do something potentially illegal for the sake of keeping our customers happy.

If I were starting a small business I would prefer that my partner be a Utilitarian. I wouldn’t want my partner to be Altruist because someone like that puts their focus on everyone else. Now it’s not the worst thing in the world but I am a firm believer in balance. Someone like that will easily neglect themselves for the sole person of looking out for others. I also wouldn’t want my partner to be an Egoist because either. I need someone that is going to look for more than just themselves and their own interest. Individuals like that will stab you in the back or undercut you in business if it means that they will benefit.

I would want my partner to be more like me in the sense of working towards the greater good. If we have the same goals, drive, and vision for business then my partner is more willing to make sacrifices and go above and beyond to ensure the business prospers. When you find people like this, they have the mentality that “Teamwork Makes The Dreamwork”. They know that everything is done to benefit the team as a whole.
