Columbia Civic Awareness and Ethical Decision Making Johnson and Johnson Case Study

Johnson & Johnson – Civic Awareness and Ethical Decision-Making Exercise (everyone must
submit): This exercise is designed to test your learning of issues relating to civic awareness and
ethical decision-making, not only in this course but during the entire program. Please respond to
the following questions to complete this exercise:
1. What ethical and civic awareness issues do you see raised by this case?
2. How has J&J been deficient in responding to these issues? What factors may have influenced
these deficient responses?
3. What have been some negative consequences (or could be future consequences) to the
company and its stakeholders due to the actions you outlined in #1 and #2?
4. Which courses of action would you recommend that J&J pursue in the future? How might these
have more favorable consequences for the company and its stakeholders?

Make sure your case write-up is written as an essay. DO NOT include the questions that are in the prompt.

In general, your case write-ups can use the following format:

Introduction – what is the company? When were they founded, what do they do? What is the basic issue or current context?

Mission – what is the mission of the company, and how do you feel the company is/is not fulfilling their mission? How do recent challenges/opportunities affect the fulfillment of their mission?

Analysis – Be sure to fully complete any tool of analysis that you use (for example, if you do a SWOT analysis, go through Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats). If you use Porter’s Five Forces, be sure to specifically list each force and whether the strength is high/medium/low.

The case write-ups roughly align with the key concepts from the chapter that comes before it. For example, Emirates Airlines requires a Porter’s Five Forces analysis, while Heineken requires a discussion of international strategy .

Conclusion – In one short paragraph, summarize your key points of analysis and “sell” your suggestions. In general, do you feel that the company is positioned to succeed or fail in the future?
