According to Netting (2016), the social services department aims to assist the lives of community members existing from the both Micro and Macro levels of need. Micro levels consist of “traditional” social work issues, while Macro level consists of more broad systematic issues such as social injustice, and other developing causes (Netting, 2016). For this discussion, I have decided to highlight on the following two community concerns: affordable housing and police brutality. The need for affordable housing continues to be an issue in several cities and states across the U.S. Because there is a lack of affordable housing options for people making lower wages, the issues of homelessness are on the rise.

Police brutality has been a highlighted issue regarding the social injustice issue involving African American men. With the most recent sentencing of Derek Chauvin regarding the death of George Floyd is the reason I have highlighted on the Macro level of an issue. Because the incident was videotaped and shown on various social media sites, the outcome has resulted in a secondary level of trauma for many in communities. Within the past few years there has been several incidents up for discussion. I feel this issue is necessary to identify to better educate the public and as a reference for the members of the police force to be more properly trained on how to deal with various circumstances on a diverse and humane level.  Also, it is important for people to understand their rights and how to conduct themselves when they have encounters with law enforcement personnel. This is a touchy subject to address; however, I do feel that proper education and instruction is necessary.
