A career I plan on pursuing is owning my own interior design business with my wife as a partner. From our perspective, we would definitely put ourselves on the scale at obedience loyalty simply because without us, there is no business. Because the business needs us no matter what, our welfare would come second to the business.

Ideally when we get to the point to expansion and have additional employees, I would want to have our business be about balanced loyalty. By recognizing the talent we have in our employees and the value they bring to our organization, I would hope they would continue to work for us for many years to come.

As an IT Support Technician for Kaiser Permanente, looking to move into the Management side of IT, I would say that the scale from obedience loyalty to free agency leans favorably towards obedience loyalty for most employees in our line of work. That is because when it comes to working in the IT sector you have much more earning and advancement potential working as a permanent hire for a company than being a “free agent” or contractor. That is not to say you cannot have a good salary or advancement opportunities being an independent contractor. For instance, you can be a contractor working for the government through the Department of Defense, like Edward Snowden once was. However, from talking with coworkers and drawing from my own employment history, I have earned more money and had more benefits working for Kaiser than contracting out for work. I also have the opportunity to grow into a management position, which I plan on doing.

While I cannot speak for every individual in the IT industry, it is my professional opinion that working as a permanent hire is more advantageous than being a contractor. Logically weighing the pros and cons of both employment scenarios, I believe most people would come to the same conclusion. Being a contractor has its benefits and purposes, which I believe are better suited for other industries rather than that of Information Technology. If an IT professional is unhappy with their current employer, they have the option to continue working for them for a period of time, then switch to another employer whom they believe will give them the opportunities they desire. Even as a permanent hire you are not “locked in” to anything and have the ability to work for another employer if you so choose. To reiterate, I believe that most employees within the IT industry lean towards the obedience loyalty side of the employment spectrum.
