The film is widely available.  Widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, this crime drama is based on Mario Puzo’s eponymous novel and focuses on the powerful and fictitious Italian-American mob family of Don Vito Corleone.  The Godfather has received critical acclaim and is seen as one of the greatest and most influential films of all time.  The film not only defined the genre but forever changed how all films would be evaluated.  

The Help (2011) (Links to an external site.) The film is widely available.  It is a period film about an aspiring author during the civil rights movement of the 1960s who decides to write a book detailing the African American maids’ point of view on the white families for which they work, and the hardships they go through on a daily basis. The film won multiple awards and was mostly praised for the acting. However, the film’s depiction of race drew some criticism as having a white savior narrative.

Part I 

In the film, The Godfather we follow the story of Vito Corelone’s strategies for controlling both his family and the clandestine crime empire to which they belong.  The film follows the rise of a treacherous rival who wants Corleone to engage in a new strategic direction for his family enterprise. At the same time, we watch the rise of new leader within the family, Vito’s son Michael and the decisions he must make to secure his family’s safety and future.
