Ohio University Making Use of the Cochrane Collaboration Brief

Depression is a common complaint voiced by many seeking primary care services at these clinics. You have recently engaged in a discussion regarding the use and effectiveness of antidepressants and would like to become more knowledgeable about the topic.

You are unsure of the state of the science for the use of antidepressants in primary care and need more background regarding the key aspects of this condition. Use the Cochrane: Our Evidence resource to write a background brief about the state of the literature on the use of antidepressants in a primary care setting. In your brief, present the consensus regarding the topic and any concerns identified in the analysis. Conclude your brief by describing your comfort level with using Cochrane as a decision-making resource. Your brief is not to be a formal document; instead, it should be an overview of the topic to serve as a resource to yourself. Even so, you should write your brief in essay form using complete sentences and no jargon.

Go to the Cochrane: Our Evidence site to get started. Use the search function to type in keywords to find a list of abstracts related to your search. Once you have found an article of interest, click on the “Read the full abstract” link to read the abstract. At the bottom of each abstract, you will find a section titled “Author’s conclusions” where a consensus statement about the topic is given. Note: Reading the full article is not required for this assignment. Full-text articles may be available through the Ohio University library if you are interested.

Your brief should contain comments regarding each of the drugs of interest, their effectiveness in treating depression in a primary care setting, and your comfort level with using the database as a decision-making resource.
