In my opinion, Southwest could benefit from backward integration to increase control of suppliers in order to control costs. Southwest’s approach is to be a low-cost airline which requires the company to control its costs and drive them down wherever and whenever possible. Due to Southwests lack of international flight options, the company could incorporate a horizontal integration strategy in order to gain control over its competitors’ international business. Thousands of mergers, acquisitions, and takeovers among competitors are consummated annually and most aim for increased economies of scale, enhanced transfer of resources and competencies, reduced competition, and fewer price wars (David et al., 2019). Pellinen et al. (2016) concluded that in acquisition situations there exists the need for vertical integration to control the growing complexity while horizontal integration is necessary to control and advance customer-centered production, and that it is key to examine the execution and results of such integrations.
