With the advent of the Internet and electronic data sources, there is an overwhelming amount of information and analyses on just about every topic imaginable. Occasionally, what is passed off as objective research is nothing more than propaganda in disguise or a subtle sales pitch for a particular product or service. To help identify non-objective sources, you must be sensitive to a researcher’s funding source or sponsor so that you are aware of any potential for conflict of interest. Most reputable journals today require potential authors to disclose any relationships that may give the appearance of a conflict of interest between a sponsor and their research.

Review each of the websites presented in the Additional Readings section of this lesson. Specifically, look at how each journal describes its manuscript submission and evaluation processes and its instructions for authors. Keep in mind the context of peer review, bias, and the impact that any conflict of interest might have on the peer review process. Look for any disclosure policy each journal may have and consider the purpose of such a policy. Once you have visited each site, read the following essay:
