One of the tools that is available for strategic managers is an organizational structure. Organizational structures can help to define and cross coordinate who is responsible for what tasks and who is assigned to what department and who they report to. Without organizational structures, there may be lack of direction, lack of organization, lack of accountability, and less impact from leadership. There are currently four types of organizational structures that are available to to strategic management they are simple structure, functional structure, Multi divisional structure, And matrix structure. The different type of organizational structures percent certain advantages and disadvantages for the strategic managers. Simple organizational Structure is a more traditional type of structure that is centralized and therefore heavily influenced bye one person Who can be the owner or CEO. This traditional method creates advantages through quicker decision making process that only involves top management. The disadvantage of simple organizational structure is that it puts too much on the plate of one person and does not drive engagement from middle or bottom management. Functional organizational structure explores the idea of separating the organization into numerous groups that have similar tasks. Each group is managed individually by an expert And therefore decisions can be made with a better scope of things. The disadvantage of a functional organizational structure Is that the decision making process For matters that impact The entire organization can become very slow paced. Divisional organizational structure improves certain aspects of functional organizational structure as it allows for there to be divisions they have numerous functions operating under the same leader. Due to the fact that they are less leaders the decision making process speeds up and becomes more effective. The disadvantages of this type of organizational structure are that there may be an overkill of leaders that operate in the same division and drive up costs. Finally the matrix organizational structure allows for a combination of both vertical Communication and horizontal. The matrix organizational structure is preferred for those that one increase communication and less barriers between divisions and functions. The large problem with the matrix divisional structure is that it creates too much input from too many individuals at once and therefore can become costly and less efficient.

It seems that simple organizational structure and matrix organizational structure present methods that create a clear path of communication that allows for faster decision making. Divisional organizational structure and functional organizational structure are methods that are more organized between leadership and groups that work on the same type of tasks, essentially decentralizing the leadership and decision making process. Even though helping to make decisons less decentralized, functional and divisional organization structures create other disadvantages, which present problems of high cost and lack of communication and engagement.

Overall, all four of the organizational structures have their own advantages and disadvantages. As a strategic management, I would chose either simple or matrix organizational structures because of then more dynamic flow of communication. Communication in the simple organizational structure flows up and down and in the matrix organizational structure, there is both vertical and sideways communication. I believe that communication can help over come some of the disadvantages that the type of structure might present and create the most efficient way to achieve the companys goals.
