Student A post: “The article I have found is about Microsoft and their commitment to zero goal waste . The type of wastes that will be eliminated by Microsoft is by using a data center called Microsoft Circular Centers by reusing, recycling electronic and hazardous wastes. Another way that Microsoft will eliminate waste is by there most innovative and improved technology to eliminate single-use plastic packaging. Also by using one of the worlds most famous methods through apps to help track and provide digital data to help manage waste data for public records. Looking ahead into the future there is some hope in obtaining zero waste in roughly ten years from now, removing 90 percent of solid waste , using 100 percent recyclable surface devices and 100 percent of recyclable packaging. One of the key factors in this happening is the people. Without the correct authorization and empowerment to being able to achieve zero waste would be nearly impossible.  Therefore, using Lean and Six Sigma methodology in these ways it will help reduce costs, help solve problems,  increase profit and most importantly reduce waste in order to help the environment.”

Student B post: “Since instructions for this discussion allow us to share personal stories about improvements that were made utilizing Lean and/or Six Sigma methodology, I will use a situation that comes from my work experience. I used to work as a Chief of Administrative and Service Department at one of the well-known banks. Part of my responsibility was conducting negotiations with external contractors and outsourcing companies, as well as preparing and signing contracts. Once a contract was ready it was supposed to go through various departments where it was checked and analyzed. I could get approval from some places and recommendations to change or fix some parts of the contract from others. That was a tedious and long process because we had to do everything manually. Literally, I would go from to door dropping the contract (sometimes many) and wait until it has been checked. To some extent, this waste would make some partners feel uncomfortable working with us because I was not able to sign the contract and start implementing the agreements for a long time after all negotiations and technical preparations. Using “DownTime” (Video #3, 2021) it was clear there was a waste in two directions, waiting and motion. We spent a lot of time waiting while a contract slowly moved from department to department and actions I undertook to deliver papers were excessive and unnecessary. I am glad it had been changed, so the bank made this procedure very convenient, fast, and effective. They introduced and implemented electronic document reconciliation. Since then, each responsible employee had limited time to check contracts, make comments or approve them. Also, all documents were moving electronically and automatically from manager to manager which significantly reduced waiting time and motions that did not add value.”

Online Discussion Etiquette Guidelines:

  • Be sure to make contributions. Even if you feel everything has been said, you need to contribute more than statements such as “I agree” or “I think we’ve really covered it.” Your presence is important to your classmates. If you do not make postings, it will have a negative impact on your community and your grade. If your response postings are statements such as “I agree” or “Great idea” or “I think we really covered it” without supporting statements with concepts from the readings, online video lectures, outside resources, relevant research, or specific real-life application, it will have a negative impact on your discussion grade.
  • Please reference the text and lecture videos in your initial post and responses. You are welcome to use outside sources, as well, but only in addition to material from the text and lecture videos.  Outside sources are not welcome as a substitute for the text and lecture videos. The text and videos do not need to be cited more than “per the text” or “per the lecture videos,” but any outside sources you choose to use, do need to be properly cited using APA format.
  • Assume positive intent in this classroom from all.
