CTUO Data Collection and Research Process Discussion

Respond to at least two peers. Focus on the obstacles or barriers within cultural issues and describe any others that you believe might not have been mentioned, explaining why you think they might arise when collecting data.

Any discussion of research ethics needs to acknowledge that, in the past, researchers have done awful things in the name of science (Salganik, 2017). It is important to consider cultural issues when collecting data because some data can be bias and pertain to a particular group and suitable for another group. Salganik (2017) explains that both risks and benefits must be distributed fairly during research based on the principle of Justice. The author state that “it should not be the case that one group in society bears the costs of research while another group reaps its benefits” (p. 298). The cultural issues that can arise from collecting data can be because one group of people benefit more than another group.

The Tuskegee experiment is a great example of cultural issues being considered when collecting data as well as attest to the fact that awful things have been done in the name of science, as many participants (specifically black men) were denied access to treatment or even the purpose of the research experiment. The black men were denied the opportunity to give consent for the experiment and judged the men claiming that they were incapable of providing informed consent because of their age and low level of education (Salganik, 2017).

In all the years that I have worked I have encountered many cultural issues that were not being addressed. In my current organization, I cannot honestly say that cultural issues are not being addressed, however, I do think there is a lack of consensus regarding all staff being culturally competent.
