As Christians, we often catch ourselves strategizing and planning the next steps for our future and career. The path God has in store for each of us may be the opposite of what we are pushing towards. Matthew 6:34 reads, “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” As human beings, we create scenarios in our heads and ask “what if” or “why me?” I do not think developing a strategy is going against God’s views and plan. If I did not develop a strategy to accomplish certain goals, I would not be the person I am today. Those strategies I developed allowed God to open my eyes through adversity and place me in a setting where I was set up to succeed. Therefore, whether our strategy is right on course of God’s plan or not, God will always become the center of those plans, if you allow him to be. Without his guidance, our dreams and goals for ourselves in school, career choice, or relationships will never thrive and grow.

Luke 14:28 reads, “For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?” The idea of this verse is to express the cost and love of Christ. By denying our own desires, we can follow God’s plan for our lives and become a disciple of the Lord to all surrounding communities. I do not think it is wrong to create a strategy and have realistic accomplishments to strive for. However, if they become more desirable than God’s desires for our lives, then this is where issues begin to arise with one’s faith. I think God’s plans for our lives are highly diverse, but if we could dream big and work towards future engagements, then there would be no desire to trust God or involve him in any aspect of our lives. He is the center of our lives, and if we are seen going down the wrong path, he will stop us in our tracks from being too far gone. We serve such a great, loving God, and he will never forsake us.

Both Matthew 6:34 and Luke 14:28 discuss the importance of planning and strategy. Both of these verses emphasize the need to plan for the future, while also making sure one does not what is happening in the present moment. After reading and thinking about these verses, I feel as I’m the Bible is emphasizing not only planning and present thought, but the balance of both and how that is the key to the perfect strategy. Matthew 6:34 of the New International Version Bible states, ” Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:34, n.d.) I believe this is the verse emphasizing being in the present moment. I know from my personal experience in financial planning that sometimes I get too focused on next months financials and do not take into account what is currently happening. This is great advice because something in a business could malfunction or break, and if the company has all its financial assets tied up for the future and has to rescue fund, this can turn into a very serious problem.

Luke 14:28 on the other hand, discusses the other need which is formulating plans and strategy. This verse from the New International Version Bible states ““Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?”. (Luke 14:28, n.d.) Like the problems that occur if you do not focus on the present enough, if you do not plan for the future (budgeting, etc.) this can also cause major financial troubles. Using the example the verse states, if a company is expanding an office and only maps out their budgeting month to month, they can easily get over their heads. If a problem arises that will have to be fixed at a later date, there should be funds in the strategic plan to accommodate for this. Estimating costs is essential in any form of business, as well as daily life. If someone gets paid twice a month, it would be a good idea not to spend all their money in one weekend so they have funds to support themselves on the week they do not receive a check.

All in all, Christians should take creating strategies very seriously. With that being said, part of their strategy should include being present as well. Strategizing does not only help financially, but it also prevents any ethics and morals being compromised. The number one thing immoral about the business world is illegal activities and greed. Planning and strategizing can help eliminate this possibility. It can prevent someone from getting themselves into a financial crisis where these two options become a possibility.
