Self-Assessment – means building up your own perspectives and develop your growth plan. Self-assessment has been something I have worked on for a long time – building a career growth plan for short term and long-term goals.

Self-assessment is broken down into 3 parts:

* Stage 1 is knowledge management to help give you structure in assessment to help recognize areas of improvement to start a plan to grow from those short comings.

* Stage 2 is where organizations can contrast their present state and measure the development aspects and determine what zones to concentrate on improvement.

* Stage 3 is the final step in the self-assessment tool depends on the inquiries in the capacity model and the development framework.

There are also 3 other areas to touch base on – mission, customer and plan. Each one is very important. Each organization should have a mission statement to build the trust of what your organization does and everyone involved. Your customers are key to success not only think of your customers as people that purchase from you but your employees too. Finally have a plan in place to assess outcomes and bridge any areas that could hinder your goals.

Which do you identify with and how has this shaped your career choice(s), describing the path it’s led you on, from career choice to your present job. Finally, briefly state which with may affect your career decision for future choice.

There are three organizational career paths one can take in their life.

Functional Path- This path is determined by one’s job, such as an accountant. In this path, someone would make a career by serving as a financial account, a CPA, or Auditor. The idea is that they remain very close to a core job/career choice and seek to move up within that area. They may move up by progressing with one company or many companies throughout their life.

Industry Path- In this path, people look at an entire industry as a job field. For example, if you take healthcare, I may start as an EMT, then move to nurse, physical therapist, or medical billing. As I progress in my career, I become a Hospital Administrator, Patient Care Advocate, or even transition to IT support for healthcare systems. While my job title changes, I have remained in the healthcare field for my entire career.

Institutional Sector- These are people that place a high value on the purpose of the company they work for. They have a desire to do something with meaning that gives back to the community. This path tends to seek non-profit companies for job positions.

I personally identify with the Industry Path the most. My career has been in the military, and even though I have a job title, I have performed many different jobs within my field. By trade, I am an Electronics Technician. In my career, I have been a Wideband Radio Technician, Network Systems Technician, Instructor/Training Developer (for electronics maintenance students), and Senior Course Manager, to name a few. While all of my jobs could easily be classified as related to the career field of electronics maintenance, they are not all the same positions and thus require different skills. Additionally, as I transition out of the military, I am working on pursuing a career in HR, so in that respect, I don’t really fit into any of these career paths just yet; I am essentially hitting the reset button.

Five models or prototypes:

The five models or prototypes defined by Salzman (1992) are backtrackers, plataeuers, career shifters, self-employers, and urban escapees.

Backtrackers – is referred to the people who self-demotion so that they can have more time for themselves and less stress. Salzman states that in a stereotypical career, it is important to rise up, and not step back. When one purposely steps back, he or she is doing just that because they feel like they are failures.

Plateauers – referred to as to the people who purposely stay in a particular role or position by refusing to accept promotions as they want to have control over their own lies. These are usually the middle-level managers whose rock-solid performance, yet understated allowed them to move happily into the retirement phase with a nominal contribution to the company’s growth.

Career shifters – according to Salzman, there is a difference between career shifter and career changers. A career shifter is a person who shifts his career from a doctor to a novelist or from a lawyer to a novelist. On the other hand, career changers aren’t downshifters. Career changers usually go from a highly responsible role with great pressure to a different role

Self-employers- are referred to the people who work alone to get more control over their working hours and place. They choose entrepreneurship as a lifestyle. This involves a strong desire to be one’s own boss, establish one’s own plans and schedules, and keep away from company politics and rigid regulations. The desire to be a self-employer is a response to the rise in instability in the corporate sector.

Urban escapees – refers to people who prefer more hospitability and working environments that are less stressful. This is a phenomenon to seek for peace and tranquility of the countryside, run away from the fast pace lifestyle of cities to a quieter and peaceful life that has existed for years.

The Five Models or Prototypes

1. Backtrackers: People who choose self-demotion to have more time and less stress. This is done to avoid the stress in life. To avoid having major responsibilities, and to avoid having to lead anyone. Understand that this usually done after a person has climbed the ladder, looked over the mountain top and know what it’s like. They are not giving up but choosing to live a more freer lifestyle.

2. Plateuers, People who intentionally stay in place by turning down promotions to stay in control of their lives. These people want to go and come as they please. They do not want the responsibility of others, just themselves. In other words, they do not want to be in charge. They would rather be comfortable

3. Career shifters: People who transfer their skills to less pressured fields. They would rather go elsewhere, where there is less stress and provide the skills they have as opposed to being a high powered, high stressed place where their skills are looked over and neglected.

4. Self employers: People who go solo to gain more control over their work hours and location. These are the ones who want to be in control of when they work and where they work. They want to set their own hours, work as hard or not as hard and have to answer to no one. They want to know that if they don’t put in the effort it will not be done. They choose to be independent nd not dependent.

5. Urban escapees: People wo opt for more hospitable, less stressful environments. These individuals want to be left alone. They want to explore on their own and would rather be in peaceful and quiet places. They tend to choose states and areas that are quiet and serene

In each job there is a place a zanra of people. You must tap into the talent that each person has. You must get to know the person or persons with whom you are working with and from there develop on what their passions are and find where thy best fit inn. Everyone is not the loud and friendly type, you know you would not be able to put that person or persons in a quiet office environment, therefore there, is a place in sales for them because of their gift of gab. This goes for those who come to work when they want and leave when they want to. Well this is a person that should be able to work for themselves. Their self motivation will be what drives them and to have them to know that if i don’t do this for myself I will not make it.
