1.1 Devotion: Biblical Perspective

ListenReadSpeaker webReader: ListenFocus

Getting Started

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Romans 12:2 (New International Version)

So often, we are quick to judge our neighbors and others around us. Today’s society has allowed us to forget what Christ has taught us: to love thy neighbor. Romans 12:2 is a blueprint that is set forth to show us how each one of us should transform our character and renew our mind. The biblical perspective recognizes the active opposition of a personal adversary. In the business world, we diversify ourselves with others from all walks of life, not knowing that God has placed each of us together for the common good. Thinking back on your workplace, how do you engage with others from other backgrounds? Do you place judgment on others? Do you reflect your views on social media and other blogging components? Is this right?

Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:

  • Articulate the importance of integrating a Christian worldview with global business practice.

1.2 Discussion: Power Distance (Part A)

Getting Started

This is a two-week discussion. Your initial post is due by the end Workshop One. You will then engage in dialogue with your classmates in at least three discussion threads (one of which is your initial post) and will post a summary of your new knowledge for each of the three discussion threads. While your interactions are not due until the end of Workshop Two, you should be prepared to engage in the discussion throughout both workshops.

For this discussion, you will watch a 10-minute video in which researcher Geert Hofstede explains “power distance,” which is one of six dimensions of national culture that were described in his formative research on culture. From the video and the accompanying PowerPoint presentation, you will discover:

  • Definition of power distance
  • How power distance transfers between generations within a society
  • Differences between cultures characterized by large distance and small power distance
  • The role of the perception of inequality and hierarchy in power distance
  • Characteristics of power distance
  • Components of the power distance index (PDI)
  • Societal characteristics that can be correlated with the PDI

Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:

  • Examine theoretical concepts in the exploration of globalization and culture.
  • Research cultural differences related to business decision making and strategic planning.

1.3 Assignment: PowerPoint Presentation

Getting Started

In this assignment, you will read a Harvard Business Review article and view a five-minute video about a transcultural leader, former Chairman and CEO of PepsiCo, Inc, Indra Krishnamurthy Nooyi. She is considered one of the most highly influential CEOs in the world and was for five consecutive years at the very top of the list of the 50 most powerful women prepared by Fortune magazine. Nooyi was born in Chennai, India. She was heavily influenced by her stay-at-home mother, Shantha Krishnamoorthy, whom she considered her first management teacher in her life. Though she had a conservative South Indian upbringing, there were many contrasting influences in Nooyi’s life. Observers noted that though she belonged to a Hindu home, she went to a Roman Catholic School. Her mother would often ask her, “How would you change the world?” (Taneja, 2017).

This profile illustrates how to synthesize information and gain a sense of the character of a society from which implications may be drawn about how to manage more effectively in that society.
  5. The 10- to 12-slide presentation should also include the answers to the following questions:
    1. What is the PDI (power distance index) for India compared to America? The difference between the two PDIs indicates what information for global managers?
    2. What were the factors that shaped Indra Nooyi as a leader?

Discuss each question in 1-2 paragraphs. Answer the questions in “answer and question format”, that is, when you are posting, include both the questions and your answers. Be sure to reply to at least one student’s post.

  1. How does your work history and lived experience relate to the conditions experienced by low wage workers described in the service economy readings?
  2. What are some of the challenges workers face in the new economy (the 24-hour service economy)?
  3. In the wake of recent welfare reform measures, millions of women entering the workforce can expect to face struggles like the ones Ehrenreich confronted in Nickel and Dimed. Have you ever been homeless, unemployed, without health insurance, or held down two jobs? What is the lowest-paying job you ever held and what kind of help—if any—did you need to improve your situation?
  4. How do booming national and international chains—restaurants, hotels, retail outlets, cleaning services, and elder-care facilities—affect the treatment and aspirations of low-wage workers? Consider how market competition and the push for profits drive the nickel-and-diming of America’s lowest-paid.Surviving an Unlivable Wage | Full Documentary – YouTube

The following components must be included in each body paragraph (in the following order).
    • Sentence 1: Point/reason sentence: This topic sentence will contain one of your reasons.
    • Sentence 2: Explanation: In this sentence, you provide information that further develops or explains Sentence 1.
    • Sentence 3: Illustration: This sentence introduces evidence that supports the reason that is presented in Sentence 1.

Criminal homework help

MY TOPIC MUST BE BASED ON POLICE BRUTALITY IN THE AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY

Critical thinking and academic writing are two of the most important skills required to complete your Dissertation.

Critical thinking. Your use of critical thinking throughout the Dissertation process will help you select a theoretical framework for your study, make arguments about why your study is important, analyze your data, and assess the implications of your results.

From previous work, you may be familiar with Bloom’s Taxonomy of critical thinking. The revised version is described in three links in this week’s Learning Resources.  Each of the three links provides a different slant, visual, and list of resources. In everything you write in this course, as well as your other Ph.D. courses and, of course, your Premise, Prospectus, Proposal, and Dissertation, you are required to demonstrate higher levels of thinking. The levels of thinking in the revised version are:  Remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating. It is at the highest three levels—analyzing, evaluating, and creating—that scholarly thinking and writing take place, including the development of your Prospectus.

Academic writing. Your use of academic writing will ensure that you communicate effectively in all sections of your Dissertation, both to your committee and the academic community at large. Being able to demonstrate academic writing generally means that you can convey your ideas, thoughts, and findings clearly, succinctly, and coherently.

APA format and style. Part of academic writing is being able to write in correct APA style and format, and this is a requirement in this course and all others, for each document you write.  Academic, scholarly writing and the correct APA style and format extend far beyond citing in the text correctly and writing a reference list in correct APA style and format.

Academic writing is a skill you will continue to hone throughout the rest of your academic and professional career. The APA Manual contains a wealth and depth of information on writing. It is recommended that you read the entire manual.

To prepare for this Assignment, review this week’s Learning Resources. Pay special attention to the “Walden’s Doctoral Capstone Resources” and review Useem B. (1997), “Choosing a Dissertation Topic” found in the Walden Library databases as well as Walden University Library. (n.d.). What is a good topic? Retrieved from http://academicguides.waldenu.edu/topic

Write 2–3 pages on the topic you are considering for your Dissertation. How did you come to select the topic? What is your interest in studying it? What is the problem that makes it worth studying? What is its significance?

Then, in another half page, briefly explain how your topic relates to criminal justice.  Appropriate use of the APA format and style is required and expected for this assignment.

Support your Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are asked to provide a reference list for all resources, including those in the Learning Resources for this course.

Nursing homework help

At its core, pathology is the study of disease. Diseases occur for many reasons. But some, such as cystic fibrosis and Parkinson’s Disease, occur because of alterations that prevent cells from functioning normally.

Understanding of signals and symptoms of alterations in cellular processes is a critical step in diagnosis and treatment of many diseases. For the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), this understanding can also help educate patients and guide them through their treatment plans.

For this Discussion, you examine a case study and explain the disease that is suggested. You examine the symptoms reported and explain the cells that are involved and potential alterations and impacts.

To prepare:

  • By Day 1 of this week, you will be assigned to a specific scenario for this Discussion. Please see the “Course Announcements” section of the classroom for your assignment from your Instructor.
By Day 3 of Week 1

Post an explanation of the disease highlighted in the scenario you were provided. Include the following in your explanation:

  • The role genetics plays in the disease.
  • Why the patient is presenting with the specific symptoms described.
  • The physiologic response to the stimulus presented in the scenario and why you think this response occurred.
  • The cells that are involved in this process.
  • How another characteristic (e.g., gender, genetics) would change your response.Discussion: Alterations in Cellular Processes

Business & Finance homework help

You are appraising a single-family residence located in the Huntington neighborhood at 4632 NW 56th Drive. The property is being acquired by a mortgage applicant and you have been asked to appraise the property by the lender. Seven potential comparable sales were initially identified. However, three of these seven were highly similar to the subject property in their transactional, physical and locational characteristics. You therefore decided to exclude the other four transactions from the comparable set.

Based on the above discussion of the elements of comparison, complete an adjustment grid for the three comparable properties. What is the final adjusted price (indication of the subject’s value) for comparable 1, 2, and 3 (assuming equal weight for the three comparable)?

Growing Up with a Start-Up

In the summer of 1970, a college senior named Paul Orfalea opened a store near the University of California, Santa Barbara, campus. He called it “Kinko’s” after his own nickname, and, with his partners, he sold college school supplies and around-the-clock copying services for students. After twenty-five years, Kinko’s had grown to 1,200 stores and 23,000 employees, and Orfalea privately and lucratively sold it to FedEx.

Over the many years that Orfalea ran his start-up, his business became amazingly profitable, but also imposed enormous stress on him and his founding partners and coworkers. As he put it, “I don’t hide the fact that I have a problem with anger.” Since selling the company, Orfalea has spent many years mending relationships with those who worked most closely with him while he was building it.

What contributed to the tensions Orfalea felt while managing this burgeoning enterprise? Long hours, of course, but also the need he felt to sustain his initial success, to make each year more profitable than the last. Entrepreneurs often believe they are only as successful as their last quarter’s profit and are driven to exceed it. Orfalea also felt that he alone was equipped to call others to account and veto what he felt were bad business ideas. Anger became a chief enemy he battled.

“In my mid- to late-forties,” he said, “I struggled increasingly to manage my own emotional nature. Sometimes I felt I’d created a monster. The monster wasn’t Kinko’s, it was me.” Orfalea acknowledged the anger and resentment that he often felt toward other longtime staff at the company, which overpowered the respect that he knew he owed them. Consequently, he directed comments and actions at his colleagues that he has spent many subsequent years attempting to redress. All in all, he has labored diligently to repair friendships that he admits were frayed by his behavior alone.

After Reflection Respond to these questions

  • What price would you be willing to pay to pursue an entrepreneurial career?
  • What price would you demand from your partners in the business?
  • How long could you let work monopolize your life?
  • In your opinion, was Orfalea right to manage Kinko’s the way he did as it grew?
  • Were the worries, anxieties, and bad moods he experienced inevitable? How would you avoid these?
