Blog Topic – Week 1

Everyone has his or her own personal beliefs about “the way people are” or “what makes people tick.”  For example, you might believe that men are better than women at math and that this difference results from the way girls are treated in schools.  You might believe that depression is the result of stressful life experiences.

Alternatively, you may simply be puzzled by certain aspects of human behavior and not really have an explanation for it.  For example, why is it that such deep divisions exist between various ethnic groups?  Why is it sometimes so difficult to remember people’s names?

List five “theories” (beliefs or hunches) that you have about people’s behavior and five things about human behavior that puzzle you.

J.G. is a 42-year-old white man presenting with a 2-month history of intermittent midepigastric pain. The pain sometimes wakes him up at night and seems to get better after he eats a meal. J.G. informs you that his doctor told him that he had an infection in his stomach 6 months ago. He never followed up and has been taking over-the-counter Zantac 75 for 2 weeks without relief. He takes no other medications. He is concerned because the pain is continuing. He has no other significant history except he is a 20 pack-year smoker and he drinks 5 cups of coffee a day. He eats late at night and goes to bed about 30 minutes after dinner. He is allergic to penicillin.

Diagnosis: Peptic Ulcer Disease:

Mr. Jones is a 54-year-old male who presents to the family practice clinic complaining of sudden urgency to urinate, back pain, frequent urination, and pain with urination. Symptoms began approximately 48 hours ago. He awoke from sleep with urgency and suprapubic discomfort 2 nights ago. His urine now has a strong odor and a cloudy appearance. He has an allergy to Bactrim.

Vaccine controversies have occurred since almost 80 years before the terms vaccine and vaccination were introduced, and continue to this day. Despite scientific consensus that recommended vaccines are safe and effective, unsubstantiated scares regarding their safety still occur, resulting in outbreaks and deaths from vaccine-preventable diseases.

After reviewing this week’s resources, you will write a paper in which you explain salient elements associated with high incidence disabilities: learning disabilities, emotional or behavioral disabilities, speech and language disabilities, and intellectual disabilities. • A brief description of the IDEA eligibility criteria.
• Two to three characteristics commonly seen in children diagnosed with a specific disability.
• Two or three research-based or evidence-based instructional strategies for use with children diagnosed with the disability. At least one strategy should demonstrate collaboration between special education and general education staff.

In this discussion, you will consider the following information prior to responding with your post.

In order to fully understand Hannah’s situation, please first answer the following:

• When are carbohydrates good for us?
• What are “good” versus “bad” carbohydrates?
• When are they not good for us or our bodies?
• What chemistry is involved in their breakdown, usage, and storage?

After you have discussed this, consider Hannah and Rose’s situations and think like a nurse!

Hannah is a 12-year-old who has had Type I diabetes for a few years. Her mother, Rose, is a strict vegetarian and believes this is also the best diet plan for her daughter. Hannah says, “I just want to eat like all my friends do!” As a result, she often cheats, and lately, there has been a steady increase in Hannah’s blood sugar.

What are the first steps you would take, as Hannah’s nurse, to assess her eating habits and understanding of diabetes mellitus?
