This small writing assignment will have two parts.
Part 1: Ask 6 people (try to ask a variety of people, different races, genders, ages, etc) the following questions, be sure to record their answers!

• Q1) Who is responsible for ones’ life (make sure you specify adult person)?
• Q2) If one is not excelling “at life” (bad job, homeless, poor, etc), who or what is responsible for helping that person (again, specify adult person)?
• Q3) If one is not excelling “at life” (as stated in the previous question) and this person has children, who or what is responsible for helping that person?
• Q4) Lastly, who is responsible for “fixing” the issue of poverty in our country? Individuals? Families? Communities? Government?

Part 1 continued; record your answers for each person within the assignment. Did you notice any trends among the answers? For example, women generally said ______, whereas men typically said_______. So on and so forth.
Part 2: Read the following quote.
The real tragedy of the poor is the poverty of their aspirations. ~Adam Smith
theorize why it is hard to “break the poverty cycle”. Meaning, poverty tends to be generational, if you “grow up poor” you will more than likely be “poor as an adult”. Who or what is “responsible” for helping the poor? Is this a societal or individual problem? What are the attitudes of society about “poor people” (you took a very small sample with the 6 people you asked)? The United States spends billions of dollars on “welfare programs” (food stamps, section 8 housing, Medicaid, free/reduced price lunches for school kids, free/low cost daycare/preschool, etc) a year. Theorize why our low-income members of society are not moving up into the middle class. Again, you’re only creating theories.
