1. Macroscopic Neurology-trace impulses macroscopically through the nervous system from the brain to the muscle.

Situation: Your thirst center tells you that you are dehydrated.

Instructions: (Part 1) Trace the impulse, listing the steps in as much detail as possible, from which your brain sends the message to the appropriate muscles to lift a glass of water to drink. As in the previous Application Assignment (parts one and two), detail the steps involved in the transmission of the neural impulse to the muscle fiber and then the steps involved in the sliding filament mechanism.

1. Macroscopic Neurology-trace impulses macroscopically through the nervous system from the brain to the muscle.

2. Microscopic Neurology-trace impulse as it passes through the neuron, neuron to neuron, and across the NMJ

Then,

specify which muscles are pulling on which bones and what type of joints are involved.

(Part 2)
Finally, trace the path of the water from the mouth to the urethra, listing the path in as much detail as possible.

What is the impact of the opposing position on the primary beneficiary of cloning?

Position Defense: Cloning

In this activity, you are asked to prepare a defense of your position either supporting or opposing cloning. Choose whatever cloning procedure or issue interests you and give your defense to a group of scientists, physicians, ethicists, and clergy. This activity is comprised of three parts. An APA-formatted bibliography is required. (A 3-page response is required for the combination of Parts A, B and C.)

Part A First, research the opposing position to your own and define the arguments that support that position. You should be as comprehensive as possible and cite the sources you use. Pay particular attention to the focus of the cloning subject you are presenting. That is, is the position focused on the clone or another beneficiary of the cloning process? What are the justifications, benefits, and rationale for the position? What is the accrued value to the patient, family, or society? Examine the position from medical, ethical, moral, and public policy perspectives. Finally you should summarize the opposing position. (25 points)

Part B Critique the position you presented in Part A. Focus your critique on the three (3) areas identified below. (35 points)
  1. What is the impact of the opposing position on the primary beneficiary of cloning?
  2. What is the impact of cloning on others who are not the primary beneficiaries of cloning?
  3. What is the potential impact of cloning on our society?

You must properly reference and document your examination and analysis of the opposing position in APA style and present a summary of your conclusions.

Part C Now present your position and argue its benefits. You must provide at least four (4) justifications for the argument you are making. Your argument should be broad in scope, addressing medical, social, ethical, moral, and religious as well as political dimensions of the issue. Your conclusions should point to a constructive course of action that should be taken to advance our understanding of the subject. (40 points)

You should consider the following four (4) principles of medical ethics in building your defense.
  1. The principle of autonomy, which means ensuring free and informed consent for all medical treatment or research; that is, the patient must be able to understand the situation and the proposed treatment and decide to receive it.
  2. The principle of nonmalfeasance, which prohibits treatment in which the harm done to a patient is greater than the resulting benefit.
  3. The principle of beneficence, which refers to the positive efforts on the part of the caregiver to improve or enhance the health of the patient without excessive cost or risk to ourselves or others.
  4. The principle of justice, which in a medical context refers to how good or bad care is distributed to the patient based on merit, need, and ability – that is, who gets what, who gets left out, and how are these decisions made?

You must properly reference and document your examination and analysis of the opposing position in APA style and present a summary of your conclusions.

Compare and contrast the codes of ethics. What are the major similarities between the two codes and what are the major differences?

Codes of Ethics

In the healthcare field, different groups of healthcare professionals adhere to their own codes of ethics. All healthcare professionals are duty-bound to follow a strict code of ethics. This has been true since the fourth or fifth century, when the Hippocratic Oath was penned. While the code has changed with the times, the code of ethics still dictates a commitment both to patients and to other healthcare professionals.

Using the South University Online Library or the Internet, create a paper and respond to the following questions in a 2- to 3-page Microsoft Word document:

  • Research two different codes of ethics for any two groups of healthcare professionals. You can research groups, such as nurses, physicians, and allied health professionals.
  • Compare and contrast the codes of ethics. What are the major similarities between the two codes and what are the major differences?
  • Consider the issue of how to triage patients in times when hospitals are overwhelmed as a result of a disaster situation. Use the codes of ethics from each of your two selected groups to explain how the dilemma could be resolved while adhering to the group’s codes of ethics.

Support your responses with examples.

Cite any sources in APA format.

What Can Nurses Do?

Many people, most of them in tropical countries of the Third World, die of preventable, curable diseases. . . . Malaria, tuberculosis, acute lower-respiratory infections—in 1998, these claimed 6.1 million lives. People died because the drugs to treat those illnesses are nonexistent or are no longer effective. They died because it doesn’t pay to keep them alive.
–Ken Silverstein, Millions for Viagra. Pennies for Diseases of the Poor, The Nation, July 19, 1999

Unfortunately, since 1998, little has changed. For many individuals living in impoverished underdeveloped countries, even basic medical care is difficult to obtain. Although international agencies sponsor outreach programs and corporations, and although nonprofit organizations donate goods and services, the level of health care remains far below what is necessary to meet the needs of struggling populations. Polluted water supplies, unsanitary conditions, and poor nutrition only exacerbate the poor health prevalent in these environments. Nurses working in developed nations have many opportunities/advantages that typically are not available to those in underdeveloped countries. What can nurses do to support their international colleagues and advocate for the poor and underserved of the world?

In this Discussion, you will consider the challenges of providing health care for the world’s neediest citizens, as well as how nurses can advocate for these citizens.

To prepare:

  • Consider the challenges of providing health care in underdeveloped countries.
  • Conduct research in the Walden Library and other reliable resources to determine strategies being used to address these challenges.
  • Using this week’s Learning Resources, note the factors that impact the ability of individuals in underdeveloped nations to obtain adequate health care.
  • Consider strategies nurses can use to advocate for health care at the global level. What can one nurse do to make a difference?

Post by Day 3 a description of at least two challenges related to providing adequate health care in underdeveloped countries. Then, describe two strategies you might use to address those challenges, and explain why. Finally, describe one strategy nurses might use in advocating for health care at the global level, and explain why this would be an effective strategy.
