Assignment 3—Literature Review, Part 1: Introduction and Selection Criteria (will be graded upon submission of part 2)

Your literature review will be submitted in two parts. The purpose of a literature review is to present relevant literature findings from nursing and related fields, show awareness of what is known about this scientific area and apply the findings to nursing practice.

The purpose of this assignment is to provide a basis for the remaining class project that build on this literature review. Only quantitative research studies should be used.

Using the skills you developed in critiquing a research article, perform a literature review in a clinical area of interest. In your classroom, you will find a list of suggested topics, but that list is by no means comprehensive—choose something of particular professional interest to you. Consult your instructor if you have any questions or need help deciding on an appropriate topic.

In your final paper, you should

  • provide a clear rationale for an important scientific investigation related to nursing science
  • include at least four relevant peer-reviewed journal articles published within the past five years

Your final paper should be 10 to 15 pages, including the cover page and references.

The following article offers helpful guidelines for constructing a critique of a nursing research article:

Describe the general advantages and disadvantages of the two research approaches featured in the articles. Use examples from the articles for support.

Application: Critiquing Quantitative, Qualitative, or Mixed Methods Studies

Critiquing the validity and robustness of research featured in journal articles provides a critical foundation for engaging in evidence-based practice. In Weeks 5 and 6, you explored quantitative research designs. In Week 7, you will examine qualitative and mixed methods research designs. For this Assignment, which is due by Day 7 of Week 7, you critique a quantitative and either a qualitative or a mixed methods research study and compare the types of information obtained in each.

To prepare:

Select a health topic of interest to you that is relevant to your current area of practice. The topic may be your Course Portfolio Project or a different topic of your choice.

Using the Walden Library, locate two articles in scholarly journals that deal with your portfolio topic: (does hand washing and appropriate staff dressing among the surgical ward nurses reduce cross infection during patient management?) 1) Select one article that utilizes a quantitative research design and 2) select a second article that utilizes either a qualitative OR a mixed methods design. These need to be single studies not systematic or integrative reviews (including meta-analysis and metasynthesis). You may use research articles from your reference list. If you cannot find these two types of research on your portfolio topic, you may choose another topic.

Locate the following documents in this week’s Learning Resources to access the appropriate templates, which will guide your critique of each article:

Critique Template for a Qualitative Study

Critique Template for a Quantitative Study

Critique Template for a Mixed-Methods Study

Consider the fields in the templates as you review the information in each article.

Begin to draft a paper in which you analyze the two research approaches as indicated below.

Reflect on the overall value of both quantitative and qualitative research. If someone were to say to you, “Qualitative research is not real science,” how would you respond?

To complete this Assignment:

Complete the two critiques using the appropriate templates (see attached files).

Write a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:

Contrast the types of information that you gained from examining the two different research approaches in the articles that you selected.

Describe the general advantages and disadvantages of the two research approaches featured in the articles. Use examples from the articles for support.

Formulate a response to the claim that qualitative research is not real science. Highlight the general insights that both quantitative and qualitative studies can provide to researchers. Support your response with references to the Learning Resources and other credible sources.

As you complete this Assignment, remember to:

Submit your paper to Grammarly and Turnitin through the Walden Writing Center. Based on the Grammarly and Turnitin reports, revise your paper as necessary.

Reminder: The School of Nursing requires that all papers submitted include a title page, introduction, summary, and references. The School of Nursing Sample Paper provided at the Walden Writing Center provides an example of those required elements (available from the Walden University website found in this week’s Learning Resources). All papers submitted must use this formatting.

Combine all three parts of this assignment into one Word document including both critique templates and the narrative with your references. Submit this combined document.

Briefly describe the community where you live and setting in which you practice.

MUST BE ATLEAST 300 WORDS. APA STYLE A MUST!!!!!!!

Collaborate with professionals across the health care system in order to find the gap in care or social determinants resulting in poor outcomes. Begin to take the lead to advocate and collaborate for the population at risk.

During this week of your practicum begin to identify a population at risk in your community that you will discuss for the next six weeks and use to create a Population-Based Nursing Care Project. Some examples of population health problems are: obesity, teen pregnancy, diabetes, infectious diseases, and childhood immunization. Discuss with your team the prevalent health problems in your practice and in your community. How can you address these health problems at the population level? Some possible resources to clarify the health problem include your local department of health, other professionals and agencies involved with the population at risk, and community groups. Read more about populations in your textbook.
Please address the following in your discussions:

  • Briefly describe the community where you live and setting in which you practice.
  • What health problems are prevalent in your practice and/or in your community?
  • For the purpose of the Population-Based Nursing Care Project, choose a population at risk. Describe the health problem and specific population.
  • Help each other refine and clarify the health problem.

Support your response with references from the professional nursing literature.

As PHNs we work with populations in the community. For this practicum, you will chose a population from your community and health issue that will be and used for your project. If you are having difficulty choosing a population, look at the sections in the book that discusses “Vulnerable Populations”. That may help you decide on a population that interests you. Also, remember, this project is a community-based project. That means it should be a project that works with populations in the community and not one which is clinically orientated. Your project should focus on a primary or secondary level of prevention. Once a person already has a disease (eg. Diabetes, CHF, mental health issues) the level of prevention become tertiary. If you need some additional information on the levels of prevention, see this webpage:

http://phprimer.afmc.ca/Part1-TheoryThinkingAboutHealth/Chapter4BasicConceptsInPreventionSurveillanceAndHealthPromotion/Thestagesofprevention

That is not to say this level is not important, it’s just not the focus of this class.

As the weeks go on, you will be exploring this group, developing interventions for the health concern and evaluating programs. Here is a list of some of the more interesting topics previous students in this class took on:

  1. Sex trafficking prevention
  2. Marketing practices of Big Tobacco to teens.
  3. Prevention of Alcohol use among teens.
  4. Prenatal care for minority women.
  5. Neural tube defect prevention.
  6. Prevention of substance abuse in populations with mental health issues.
  7. Cancer screenings among minorities (eg. Breast, cervical…)
  1. Access to care
  2. Health literacy improvement
  3. Access to nutritious food.
  4. STD prevention
  5. Elder abuse prevention
  6. Prevention of heart disease among African Americans
  7. HIV prevention among minorities

Population-Based Nursing Care Project Team Discussion

Post your responses to the Discussion based on the course requirements. Your initial postings must be 250–350 words (not including the full references). Keep your responses succinct. Your written assignments must follow APA guidelines. Be sure to support your work with specific citations from this week’s Learning Resources. Other scholarly sources may also be used to support your work. Refer to the APA Publication Manual to ensure that your in-text citations and reference list are correct.

Please address the following in  your discussions:  Briefly describe the community where you live and setting in which you practice.

·         What health problems are prevalent in your practice and/or in your community?

·         For the purpose of the Population-Based Nursing Care Project, choose a population at risk. Describe the health problem and specific population.

·         Help each other refine and clarify the health problem.

These examples are not the only topics you can use. They are just examples. However, once you have decided on a population for your project, you will need to focus on one (1) health issue which you feel is of importance in this community.  I will need to approve your choices for this project. I have restrictions on these issues diabetes, obesity and fall prevention. Unless you can prove either the incidence of these issues are catastrophic or you know of a unique intervention, these health issues will not be approved.

Explain how the core functions of community/public health nursing and the standards of practice are met with that specific role.

Application
The History of Public Health and the Role of the Community/Public Health Nurse

Using Chapter 2 in the course textbook, your assigned reading on the role of the nurse in a specific public health setting, and this week’s media presentation, address the following in a 2- to 3-page paper:

Trace the history of the public health nurse including the contributions made by Lillian Wald and the Henry Street Settlement. Also, summarize the role of the nurse in the practice setting assigned. Include the following in your summary:

  • Explain how the core functions of community/public health nursing and the standards of practice are met with that specific role.
  • Describe the population served by the nurse in this role.
  • Which interventions might the nurse in this role utilize?
  • Explain the level of practice used in this practice setting (primary/secondary/tertiary).
  • Describe an ethical dilemma that might be encountered in this nursing role.

For this Application Assignment, write a 2- to 3-page paper tracing the history of the public health nurse including the contributions made by Lillian Wald and the Henry Street Settlement. Also, summarize the role of the nurse in the practice setting assigned. Use the following guidelines and evaluation criteria and the headings below for each section. Use a minimum of three references from the professional nursing literature in the assigned course readings and other references in the Walden Library. If they are relevant, you may use one or two professional Web sites in addition to the literature references.

  • Overview—20 points

Begin this paper with a brief paragraph that provides an overview of the assignment and its purpose. There is no separate heading for this paragraph; the heading for this paragraph is the same as the title of the paper. This paragraph will be about 2–3 sentences. The last sentence in this paragraph is a sentence that begins “The purpose of this paper is to…¨

  • History of Public Health Nursing—30 points

Summarize the history of public health nursing and how that has influenced the core functions of community/public health nursing and the standards of practice as it relates to the specific role assigned to you. This section will be 2–3 paragraphs.

  • Impact on nursing practice—40 points

Outline the population served by the nurse in the role assigned. Discuss the interventions a nurse in this role may utilize. Explain the level of practice used in the practice setting of the assigned role (primary, secondary, tertiary) and an ethical dilemma that may be encountered in that nursing role. Provide an analysis of how this information impacts the profession of nursing. This section will be 2–3 paragraphs.

  • Summary—10 point

End the paper with a 1-paragraph summary of the main points of the paper.

Format/Style

Proofread the paper as described in the tips for success in this course and correct any typos, grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, or APA format errors before submitting your paper. Up to 40 points can be deducted from the grade for this assignment for these types of errors, or for not using at least the minimum number of required references.
