Have you observed a case of successful emergent strategy in any field? Briefly describe the events. Why was the strategy successful?

Part 1: Successful Emergent Strategy

There are times when the best strategies are simply unplanned and happen. When these “emergent” strategies are born (often out of conflict) it is important to be flexible in order to be successful. It is also important to be sure to determine factors to success. This week we will discuss how these items affect overall strategy.

Have you observed a case of successful emergent strategy in any field? Briefly describe the events. Why was the strategy successful?

Part 2SMART Criteria

Utilizing various criteria in order to create and determine success in any strategy is important. This week you will learn about how to utilize SMART criteria in order to create and clarify strategy.

Select any one personal activity or hobby. Write your objectives using the SMART criteria. Now answer the following questions:

  • Does the exercise help clarify your ideas

Write vision and mission statements for the county health department that provides services to pregnant women.

A county health department wants to increase the number of Medicaid beneficiaries that participate in prenatal care. It knows that only 40 percent of the expectant mothers eligible for prenatal care fully use the benefit. Many of these target customers make only one or two prenatal visits and then drop out of the program. Most of these women visit the emergency room if they have problems during pregnancy, and also come to the emergency room when they are in labor.

In 5- to 6-pages:

  1. Define at least four questions you would need to ask in order to write a SWOT analysis.
  2. Write vision and mission statements for the county health department that provides services to pregnant women.
  3. Write at least four objectives for the department. In your objectives, try to address the problem presented in the scenario.

List at least three analyses that should be completed before reaching this decision. Be specific about the factors that should be included in each analysis.

Part 1: Contemporary Healthcare Facilities

Just as the state of the healthcare industry and the concept of the patient have changed so have healthcare facilities. Physicians’ offices aren’t always offices anymore. Healthcare facilities can be mobile, virtual or traditional. This week we will look at how healthcare facilities have evolved.

Besides concierge medicine and retail clinics, identify two other contemporary healthcare facilities identified in the literature. Discuss how marketers could advertise the new facilities and the impact you think the new facilities will have on healthcare consumers and currently existing facilities in the market.

Part 2: Refocusing Facilities

With the many changes occurring in the healthcare industry, managers may find themselves needing to change their strategy in order to stay relevant in the market. Changing strategic focus takes time, effort and planning. As healthcare continues to evolve the idea of changing corporate strategic focus may begin to occur more often in healthcare businesses.

A strategy of focusing a general facility to specialize in ethnic or other minority group care can be very risky. List at least three analyses that should be completed before reaching this decision. Be specific about the factors that should be included in each analysis.

What advantages do you think a concierge practice of medicine might contribute to the hospital’s offerings of products to the community?

You work for a marketing department in a hospital within a suburban location of a large metropolitan area. Though it neighbors million-dollar homes, the hospital’s mission includes providing care to underserved and indigent populations in the area.

A new primary care physician moved into the area and approached your hospital to partner with her as she begins a new practice in the community. Because the administration is always anxious to welcome new practitioners to the hospital, you agree to meet with the physician. During the meeting, the physician explains that she wants to establish the first concierge medical practice in the community. The physician plans to attract around 100 families to her practice, and she plans to charge from $300 to $1,000 per month, depending on the size of the family unit. (Note: A goal of 100 families may not be realistic; however, the number makes for easier calculations.)

The patients who join the concierge practice will receive access to the physician’s services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at an office located near the hospital. Families will receive preventive care services, and the physician will design wellness programs to encourage healthy lifestyles for her patients. The physician will use the hospital for all emergent care, day surgeries, rehabilitation, and in-patient care. The physician also plans to use nutritionists and the hospital’s fitness center facilities.

  1. Discuss some of the goods or services that could be highlighted in a marketing campaign that involves a concierge practice of medicine.
  2. What advantages do you think a concierge practice of medicine might contribute to the hospital’s offerings of products to the community?
  3. Discuss some of the issues and challenges that may arise from the hospital sponsoring a concierge practice of medicine.

Compare the use of print media and the Internet in the promotion of healthcare services. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? Explain.

Part 1: Promotion of Healthcare Services

In recent years, promotions have become an important part of healthcare strategy. Promoting a service is often very different than the promotion of a product. Equally important is the medium through which you promote your service, whether it is in person; online or through traditional promotional avenues, promotion has become a critical aspect of a marketing strategy.

Compare the use of print media and the Internet in the promotion of healthcare services. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? Explain.

Part 2: How HIPAA works with strategy?

In 1996, the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act was put into effect. This legislation profoundly changed the way the healthcare industry work in the United States. As such, healthcare organizations have had to create and change their strategies around this landmark legislation.

Discuss the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and the impact it has had on the exchange of data that includes health-related patient information.

Case Study Scenario

The quarterly reports of expenditures for all the St. Agnes Health System have been distributed. You are the Director Team for the Orthopedic Clinic, and your area has seriously overspent its budget for the third consecutive quarter. There are rumors circulating that your job depends on reducing costs for supplies, the most expensive item on the list. Other rumors suggest that all the clinic nurses fear they will lose their jobs if the poor financial report for the clinic causes the board to convert the clinic into an urgent care. Although morale has been low, you have been adequately staffed and there seems to be an increase in sick calls by everyone on the team.
