Identify a recently adopted information, education, or communication technology tool in your specialty area. Reflect on how it is used and how its use impacts the quality of care.

Current Information and Communication Technologies

With so much attention focused on health care reform, it is important that nurses be given the opportunity to use high-quality technology tools. These tools can increase access to vital medical information, promote effective communication among health care professionals, and improve the patient experience. By actively seeking out and adopting these tools, nurses can greatly enhance the quality and safety of care that they provide.

This Discussion focuses on identifying quality technology tools that increase the ability of nurses to provide safe, effective care.

To prepare:

· Review the various technology tools.

· Identify a recently adopted information, education, or communication technology tool in your specialty area. Reflect on how it is used and how its use impacts the quality of care.

· Consider how your identified technology tool might impact nursing practice if it were more widely used. What are some barriers preventing increased usage? How could wider implementation be facilitated?

Question:

Post a description of a current or new information, education, or communication technology tool that is being used in your specialty area and assess its impact on the quality of care. Highlight the effect that increased use of this technology would have on nursing practice and discuss the barriers that are slowing or hindering its adoption. Summarize how adoption of the technology tool could be facilitated.

· What was the specific intervention that was used? Is this a new intervention or one that was already used?

Assignment: Applying Current Literature to Clinical Practice

Literature in psychotherapy differs from other areas of clinical practice. Generally, there are no clinical trials in psychotherapy because it is often neither appropriate nor ethical to have controls in psychotherapy research. This sometimes makes it more difficult to translate research findings into practice. In your role, however, you must be able to synthesize current literature and apply it to your own clients. For this Assignment, you begin practicing this skill by examining current literature on psychodynamic therapy and considering how it might translate into your own clinical practice.

Learning Objective

· Evaluate the application of current literature to clinical practice

To prepare:

· Review and evaluate the psychodynamic therapy article attached in the file and reflect on the insights they provide.

The Assignment

In a 5- to 10-slide PowerPoint presentation, address the following:

· Provide an overview of the article you selected.

· What population is under consideration?

· What was the specific intervention that was used? Is this a new intervention or one that was already used?

· What were the author’s claims?

· Explain the findings/outcomes of the study in the article. Include whether this will translate into practice with your own clients. If so, how? If not, why?

· Explain whether the limitations of the study might impact your ability to use the findings/outcomes presented in the article. Support your position with evidence-based literature.

Note: The presentation should be 5-10 slides, not including the title and reference slides. Include presenter notes (no more than ½ page per slide) and use tables and/or diagrams where appropriate. Be sure to support your work with specific citations from the article you selected. Support your approach with evidence-based literature.

BELOW ARE THE ARTICLE TO SELECT FROM

Identify and explain any legal implications that exist for failure to adhere to a standard of care

Assignment 1:

Recognizing the Role of Adhering to the Standard of Care

When providing health care, there are standards of care which a reasonably prudent provider should follow. Providers at all levels are held to these standards of care. Failure to provide competent care to your patients will put you at risk for malpractice. Remaining current with the evidenced-based guidelines and providing optimal care will minimize the risk of liability.

For this Assignment, you will create a PowerPoint presentation that explains any legal implications that exist for failure to adhere to a standard of care, the key elements of malpractice, and compare the differences in malpractice policy options.

To prepare:

Consider the importance of using professional resources such as the National Guideline Clearinghouse to guide care delivered

Create a PowerPoint presentation no more than 15 slides in length that addresses the following:

Identify and explain any legal implications that exist for failure to adhere to a standard of care

Identify and explain the key elements of malpractice

Compare the differences in malpractice policy options

Consider how you could locate evidence to examine the needed change. What literature would you review?

  • Think about a problem in a specific unit or area of your organization or one with which you are familiar. What are the indications that there is a problem? What change may be needed? (Note: This problem should be different from the one you are addressing in the Week 2 Assignment.). A clinical problem works well; an example is that you note an increasing number of patients with deep vein thrombosis following orthopedic surgery.
  • Consider how you could locate evidence to examine the needed change. What literature would you review? Which professional organization standards or recommendations may be relevant? With whom would you communicate/network to ascertain community standards? Bear in mind that you may also look at evidence from fields other than nursing.
  • Review the information in the Learning Resources. Using your knowledge of contemporary theories of chaos and complexity, consider how you could adapt Lewin’s classic model for change and apply this to your selected problem.

By Day 3

Post a description of the problem, including relevant indicator(s). Provide a synopsis of how you would proceed in locating evidence, including research literature you would consult, which professional organization standards may be relevant, and with whom you would communicate or network to ascertain community standards. Then, identify how you would adapt Lewin’s classic model of change based on chaos and complexity theory to address this evidence–based change.

What are some of the changes that the people you  interviewed could implement in their lifestyles and behaviors to improve  their health status?

Healthy Lifestyles

Research the South University Online Library  and the Internet to read more about the behavioral patterns. Conduct an  interview (via phone or face-to-face) of ten or more people in the age  group of fifteen to sixty-four years, to survey the impression of their  health, health problems, and lifestyle choices.

Ask the following questions, while conducting the interview:

  • Do you smoke?
  • Do you drink alcohol?
  • Do you wear a seatbelt while driving a car?
  • Do you talk on the phone while driving?
  • Do you exercise four to five times a week?
  • Do you eat a healthy diet with fruits, vegetables, fish, chicken, and whole grain?
  • Do you suffer from any of the following conditions: high blood pressure, stress, weight issues, or diabetes?

Compile the data collected through the  interview for each category of questions, taking into consideration the  age group to which they belong.

For doing so, create a three column chart.

  • In the first column, list the health behaviors for which people were interviewed.
  • In the second column, list the percentage of individuals interviewed against each behavior.
  • In the third column, list the percentage of people  who believe they have healthy lifestyles (information can be found in  the text readings or from the Internet).

Next, analyze the chart to understand how these columns differ from each other.

In a Microsoft Word document, create a 3- to 4-page report of your analysis, answering the following questions:

  • Are you surprised to see the trends of the most common behaviors? Discuss.
  • Did an individual’s age  relate to his or her health behavior? For example, do individuals in  the age group of fifty to sixty years have different behaviors than  individuals in the age group of thirty to forty years?
  • What are some of the changes that the people you  interviewed could implement in their lifestyles and behaviors to improve  their health status?

Support your responses with examples.

What are the two major  types of abused drugs and the age groups most likely to use them? Why is  drug usage prevalent among these populations?

Public Health Care Problems

The leading public health care problems in the U.S. are:

  • Mental disorders
  • Consumption of alcohol, nicotine, OTC drugs, and prescription drugs

The count for people suffering from a  diagnosable mental disorder in a given year is on the rise. This figure  translates to approximately 57.7 million people currently (National  Institute of Mental Disorder, 2008).

In relation to problems regarding drugs,  consumption of alcohol is considered as the leading problem. In  addition, the consumption of Nicotine, OTC drugs, and prescription drugs  are other prominent issues (McKenzie, Pinger, & Kotecki, 2008).

Based on these statements, create a report in a Microsoft Word document, discussing the following:

  • Is the diagnosis of mental illnesses still viewed with a negative attitude as was done several years ago? Why or why not?
  • Are the local and national health care providers adequately responding to the needs of people suffering from mental disorders?
  • Should the local health  care communities be held responsible for mandating specific care and  treatment for the affected population? Why or why not?
  • What are the two major  types of abused drugs and the age groups most likely to use them? Why is  drug usage prevalent among these populations?
  • What roles should the state governments’ or private  health agencies or organizations play in order to prevent and control  drug abuse?
