Describe the general advantages      and disadvantages of the two research approaches featured in the articles.      Use examples from the articles for support.

Assignment: Critiquing Quantitative, Qualitative, or Mixed Methods Studies

Critiquing the validity and robustness of research featured in journal articles provides a critical foundation for engaging in evidence-based practice. In Weeks 5 and 6, you explored quantitative research designs. In Week 7, you will examine qualitative and mixed methods research designs. For this Assignment, you will critique a quantitative and either a qualitative or a mixed methods research study and compare the types of information obtained in each.

To prepare:

· Select a health topic of interest to you that is relevant to your current area of practice- (Pediatric Nursing). The topic may be your Course Portfolio Project or a different topic of your choice.

· Using the Walden Library, locate two articles in scholarly journals that deal with your portfolio topic: 1) Select one article that utilizes a quantitative research design and 2) select a second article that utilizes either a qualitative OR a mixed methods design. These need to be single studies not systematic or integrative reviews (including meta-analysis and metasynthesis). You may use research articles from your reference list. If you cannot find these two types of research on your portfolio topic, you may choose another topic.

· Locate the following documents in this week’s Learning Resources to access the appropriate templates, which will guide your critique of each article:

  • Critique Template for a      Qualitative Study
  • Critique Template for a      Quantitative Study
  • Critique Template for a      Mixed-Methods Study

· Consider the fields in the templates as you review the information in each article. Begin to draft a paper in which you analyze the two research approaches as indicated below. Reflect on the overall value of both quantitative and qualitative research. If someone were to say to you, “Qualitative research is not real science,” how would you respond?

To complete this Assignment:

· Complete the two critiques using the appropriate templates.

· Write a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:

· Contrast the types of information that you gained from examining the two different research approaches in the articles that you selected.

  • Describe the general advantages      and disadvantages of the two research approaches featured in the articles.      Use examples from the articles for support.
  • Formulate a response to the      claim that qualitative research is not real science. Highlight the general      insights that both quantitative and qualitative studies can provide to      researchers. Support your response with references to the Learning      Resources and other credible sources.

· As you complete this Assignment, remember to:

· Submit your paper to Grammarly and SafeAssign through the Walden Writing Center. Based on the Grammarly and SafeAssign reports, revise your paper as necessary.

· Reminder: The School of Nursing requires that all papers submitted include a title page, introduction, summary, and references. The School of Nursing Sample Paper provided at the Walden Writing Center provides an example of those required elements (available from the Walden University website found in this week’s Learning Resources). All papers submitted must use this formatting.

· Combine all three parts of this assignment into one Word document including both critique templates and the narrative with your references. Submit this combined document.

Question 1

Recently, a report was published describing a string of cases of Norwalk virus gastroenteritis among passengers on cruise ships. From this report, an epidemiologist went on to form a number of hypotheses as to why there had been this rather unusual increase in reported gastroenteritis outbreaks on cruise ships in 2012. The cruise ship owners contacted the Centers of Disease control and Prevention (CDC) to conduct an in-depth analysis of the possible modes of transmission of the Norwalk virus in the cruise ship environment. CDC investigators interviewed all of the passengers on the last affected cruise (N=3,000) and obtained information on the passenger’s recreational activities. They found the following results: 1,000 passengers had gone swimming in the upper deck pool and 2,000 passengers had never gone swimming in the upper deck pool. 100 of the passengers who swam in the upper deck pool and 100 of the passengers who did not swim in this pool developed Norwalk virus gastroenteritis during the cruise. FYI: The cruise lasted one week.

· Set up the 2×2 table for these data.

· Calculate the risk ratio of gastroenteritis associated with swimming in the upper deck pool.

· State in words your interpretation of the above risk ratio

· Calculate the risk difference in the above example

· State in words your interpretation of the above risk difference

Question 2

For this problem, note the following chart:

Age Group
(in years)

% of Population in Age Group

Influenza Rate per 1,000 person-years

There are 10,000 individuals in City A, which is located in Massachusetts. Eight young individuals and 420 old individuals develop the flu over the course of a year.

· Use these data to calculate the crude influenza rate per 1,000 individuals per years in City A.

· What is the crude rate of influenza in City B?

· What is the crude rate of influenza in City C?

· Calculate an age-adjusted influenza rate for each of the cities. Use the age distribution for the State of Massachusetts (shown in the table) as the standard.

Question 3

Recently, Australian researchers conducted a study of the relationship between optimism and colon cancer survival. Their hypothesis was that colon cancer patients who had a positive outlook on life would have a lower five-year cumulative incidence of mortality. The study included 100 recently diagnosed colon cancer patients who underwent psychological testing and were found to have a optimistic outlook on life and 100 recently diagnosed colon cancer patients who underwent the same psychological tests and were found to have a pessimistic outlook on life. By the end of five years of follow-up, 50 of the 100 patients with the optimistic outlook and 75 of the 100 patients with the pessimistic outlook had died from colon cancer.

· Set up and fill in the two by two table using these data.

· What is the prevalence of colon cancer in the study population?

· Compare the cumulative incidence of mortality in the optimistic group to the cumulative incidence of mortality in the pessimistic group using a ratio measure of association.

· State in words your interpretation of the result you found in part c.

Percentage of students enrolled in a college who developed influenza during the spring semester of 2012.

Question 1

Suppose that you are following a group of children for the development of asthma over a one- year period. You identify 100 children on January 1st, screen them for asthma, and set up a monitoring program to check on their status on a monthly basis. Five children are considered prevalent cases because they were diagnosed with asthma before January 1st. Ten children develop asthma on March 1st and another ten children develop asthma on July 1st. Another 10 children who remain healthy were followed for six months and then were lost to follow-up. All of the remaining children did not develop asthma and were not lost to follow-up. Follow-up ended on December 31st.

· What was the prevalence of asthma on June 1st?

· What was the prevalence of asthma on September 1st?

· How many person-months of observation were accrued by this population?

· What was the incidence rate of asthma in this population for the one-year period?

Question 2

A population of 1,000 people is monitored for a year for the development of measles. No one has measles at the start of the investigation. Thirty people develop measles on June 30 and twenty people develop measles on September 30. Eight people are lost to follow-up on March 31 and twenty-four people are lost to follow-up on November 30. None of those lost to follow-up had developed measles prior to becoming lost. Assume that you can only get measles once.

· What is the cumulative incidence of measles in this population?

· What is the incidence rate of measles?

· What is the prevalence of measles on July 1?

Question 3

· Which type of measure of disease frequency best describes each of the following scenarios?

· Percentage of students enrolled in a college who developed influenza during the spring semester of 2012.

· Percentage of students enrolled in an epidemiology class who had sore throats on the first day of class.

· Percent of breast cancer patients who underwent mastectomy during 2012.

· Percent of men found to have high blood pressure at their yearly physical.

· Number of newly-diagnosed cases of AIDS in a year per 100,000 persons.

· Percent of infants born with spina bifida out of 1,000 live-born infants.

· Percent of drivers found to be legally drunk at the time of their car accident.

How will a negative manager affect the overall group dynamic as opposed to a positive leader who wants to see his or her team develop?

We learned effective communication is essential in overcoming conflict, embracing our similarities and differences, and streamlining our work. On the basis of your learning, review the scenario given below and develop the ways to address any misunderstandings based on ineffective communication.

You have been invited to be in charge of developing a team-building activity to improve collaboration, morale, and increased communication for your team members. Your department is closing for the day so you all can spend about four hours together in a team environment. The staff members will be placed into groups of three to run a maze, and the winning team will receive an extra four hours paid time off (PTO) time to use for a half vacation day. All members are excited about getting extra time off and, even though they have not participated in a maze-running event, they are happy to be out of the office. After the race is over, the group will be treated for lunch at a very nice restaurant. Review the following details of team members:

  • Rosamma and Mary are the two administrative staff members who do not get along. Rosamma keeps to herself, is quiet, wears traditional long dresses and cooks ethnic foods for lunch every day. Mary is outspoken, loud, hurries through assignments, and seems to be on her cell phone often talking about her personal life to friends. Mary is twenty and Rosamma is forty-six.
  • Cindy, thirty-five, and Lolita, forty, are the part-time staff members. They often bring their problems to work and are stressed due to the economy. They interact at work with the full time staff, but the full time staff think they complain too much and “what for, they only work part-time.”
  • Chip is a twenty-three-year-old maintenance worker who has two children and works a part-time job at night in addition to his full-time role. He is tired as he has been continuously working for many days.
  • Samir is fifty-five and works full-time, and cannot wait until he retires.
  • Sarah is the fifty-two-year-old negative department manager who complains about everyone else. However, she is a strong informal leader and has influence over the group.
  • Jerry is twenty-four and in graduate school. In fact, he is the president of his class and majors in business. He will likely leave in about one year when he graduates. He has a positive attitude and is currently a bit demotivated because no one likes to work together and there seems to be no direction at this point. He has made fun of Sarah just because she makes negative comments to him.
  • You are the manager (use your current age) and you are just promoted into this position as the leader of the group.

Your presentation should consist of 12–15 professional color Microsoft PowerPoint slides (not including the title and reference slide) along with detailed speaker notes to include examples to support each slide.

You need to divide the teams into three groups. Remember this is a team-building activity.

  • Can you put Rosamma and Mary together on a team when they clearly have communication issues and Mary feels Rosamma is “slow and too quiet . . . besides, she prays all the time.” Should the two younger males in the department be put on the same team or divided up to run with the women, even though they make comments about how old Sarah is and how she wears old-fashioned clothes? Give reasons.
  • How will you make the determination which members to put together?
  • Should members, who have a negative attitude, be placed with team members who are excited about this event? Why or why not?
  • How will a negative manager affect the overall group dynamic as opposed to a positive leader who wants to see his or her team develop?
  • How influential can an informal leader be among the team members? Can an informal leader carry more power than the formal manager?
  • What barriers to effective teamwork can you anticipate and how will it be addressed?
  • What specific traits will make this team-building activity a success?
  • How can effective leaders demonstrate care and value the workgroup to improve collaboration, motivation, and low turnover in the workplace?
  • How do you think results can improve when effective communication is practiced in the healthcare field with peers, colleagues, and leadership teams?

Support your responses with examples.
