It is time to begin connecting theory to practice. You will take everything you’ve learned in the
course to this point, and then create a way to identify (or map) the nature of a conflict. You will
refer to this document for later assignments, so be sure to craft it carefully.
In your map, be sure to include items such as:
 Background
 Parties to the conflict (primary, secondary, interested others, including groups)
 Context (issues – needs, interests, positions based; conflict dynamics – antecedents,
stereotyping)
 Resolution potential (alternative routes to a solution, limiting factors, techniques of
management)
The finished product should be a one-page form you can complete any time you are confronted
with a conflict. If you fall short of ideas, refer to your Week 1 assignment for help.
Once you’ve crafted your conflict map, take a few minutes to think about the term conflict and
what it means to you. As an intervener, it is important to know your own biases coming into the
process. For the first part of this assignment, determine 10-20 different words or phrases that
help you define conflict. Then, draft analysis of your definition and words/phrases based on the
‘types’ of conflict listed in the first bulleted item below.
 Identify which word you focused on from the list you created to define conflict: relationship,
data, interest, structural, value, and/or pseudo. Be specific and detailed in your response.
 Determine if your words tend to be directly related to only one or two types of conflict, and
then explain why you think this occurred. Be sure to use specific examples and concepts from
the readings and research as well.
 Indicate your thoughts when you think of conflict. Do you tend to view it as a negative
interaction, or do you view conflict as more of an opportunity to solve problems? Analyze how
you believe you gained this viewpoint regarding conflict.
 Analyze whether your perception of conflict, based on what you have listed and what you have
read, is an accurate perception and whether it can positively contribute to your success in
conflict resolution.
Length: 5-7 pages, including your conflict map, but not including title or reference pages
References: Support your analysis with at least five scholarly resources. In addition to these
specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles, may be
included.
Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts
presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic.

These essay questions are intended to be completed within three hours, so you should try to budget between thirty and forty minutes per question. You may of course spend additional time on them as needed. There are no minimum or maximum length requirements for answers. They will be evaluated and graded on the basis of how well they address the question asked, the relevance, logic and persuasiveness of the arguments expressed AND how well they apply the concepts and best practices provided in course materials. Students are advised to BE DIRECT in answering the questions. Answers which present a lot of basic content about the knowledge area being addressed in a question but do not organize content into a coherent, persuasive argument will receive LOWER, not higher scores! Your content is expected to be legible and understandable, but your answers will NOT be judged on the basis of spelling, grammar or English usage as long as it is comprehensible.
In each question, you are expected to pretend you are a credentialed Project Management Professional to get you to apply the project management instruction provided in the course. The company is organized as a matrix organization and is in the planning phase of a large program consisting of multiple interrelated projects. The teams which are assigned to these projects are dispersed in offices in a dozen different offices in Asia, Europe, North and South America.
The program manager invites you to a breakfast meeting along with two of the senior business managers who are major stakeholders in the project.
“We would like to pick your brain,” says the program manager as you settle in at a vacant seat at the conference room table with a mug of coffee and a bagel. “The last time I led a program like this, I was extremely frustrated by the lack of effective communication within and across the project teams.”

You have just been hired as a project manager for a large company, and have been assigned to manage Project Icarus, a mission-critical project which needs to be completed within a fixed deadline. While the organization is large and runs many projects, it has never paid attention to project management best practices.
The manager who hired you told you that senior management has indicated they want to change that, as a couple of big projects started in the past two years failed spectacularly. “We’ve hired you and a couple of other PMP-certified project managers because the CEO was furious about those projects,” he confides. “We need to develop better processes and need people like you to get us moving in the right direction.”
You take your manager’s words to heart as you start planning efforts on Project Icarus. You work with your project team to develop project management plans in all of the knowledge areas. This includes a risk management plan which requires you to sit down with project stakeholders to identify and analyze risks qualitatively and quantitatively.
You hold the first risk identification session and appoint yourself to be the facilitator. In attendance are several senior managers who are major stakeholders in the project. We are going to need to hire at least one vendor to handle some complex software development for some key subsystems. One afternoon, you are called into a conference room for a meeting with Ali, the head of the PMO and Gabriela, the new director of software development. You notice that many of the other project managers employed in the unit are also in attendance.
