Purpose

Port scanning is the act of systematically scanning a computer’s ports. A port is a place where information goes into and out of a computer; port scanning identifies open doors to a computer. Port scanning has legitimate uses in managing networks, but port scanning also can be malicious in nature if someone is looking for a weakened access point to break into your computer.

The purpose of this assignment is to use a port scanner to detect and learn about open ports on your computer.

Directions

1. Read and execute the instructions for Hands-on Project 1 starting on page 44.

2. Write a paper describing your experience and project results. Describe challenges you encountered. What did Nmap find? What ports are open? Can any of these ports be used for malicious intent? Use the internet to find the answer to this question.

3. Paste the screenshots into your paper. For each screenshot, describe in DETAIL what is taking place.
