UCSD Social Media Syntax Database Questionnaire

IMPORTANT – when you open the Social Media Syntax Database, go to File, then Save As, and save the database to a secure folder. Name the file, Syntax Database ‘your last name’.

This week we’ll learn about syntax files, a way to save instructions to execute commands in SPSS. Defining databases with syntax commands saves tons of time when working on large databases and huge data dumps.

When you want to continue working on a syntax file, DO NOT double click the syntax file to open it directly (this is the one with this suffix .sps). Double click your syntax database data file, the one you “saved as” from the file I created for you with all of the variable names (this is the one with the suffix .sav).

In that data file, click File/Open/Syntax and find your syntax file wherever you saved it. The two files will be linked only by opening them in this manner.

Remember – turn in the SPSS syntax file, the one with the suffix .sps
