CIS 515 New York State University Week 3 Database Development Discussion
The development of a database requires thorough methodology that ensures quality within the solution. Imagine you have been contracted to develop a finance database that will help an organization track monthly expenditures by departments.
- Discuss the various activities that you would have to achieve each phase, using the DBLC.
- Assess possible challenges that may exist within each phase.
- Suggest actions that one can perform in order to overcome these possible challenges.

Hello professor and classmates,
Hello everyone! I hope everyone is having a fabulous day and staying safe. I am ready for warm weather to arrive here and stay in NC!
The Database Life Cycle-DBLC contains six phases: initial database study, implementation and loading, database design, testing and evaluation, operation and maintenance, and evolution. The purpose of the DBLC is to incorporate the lifetime of the database. Every step has precise targets that demand to be delivered.
Database Initial Study is one step. The organization’s position must be examined to be able to define the obstacles, limitations, objectives, scope, and boundaries within the database. In this specific scenario, you must track monthly expenses by departments within the
organization. You will need to know initially how does organization operates, what the mission is, the organizational structure, and it is incredibly imperative to being able to determine how the data within the organization emanates. Once this is achieved, difficulties from the projected outcomes must be examined. For instance, what are the prevailing systems that are being used as a means for tracking? Is it being fully achieved, or has it failed? What is needed for a new DB to trace expenses? Once these obstacles are recognized, then a full course plan of development can come into play, and intentions must be outlined. For instance, designing ad-hoc queries for administration to be able to track expenditures by businesses.
Database Design is another step. The purpose of the database will maintain business operations, and objectives are completed on this step. It would help if you made certain that the final outcome meets use and system requirements. In the database design process, you must focus on the data characteristics that are required to be able to build the database model. The Minimal Data Rule states that “All that is needed is there, and all that is it is needed.” This is all done in four steps:
- Data analysis and requirements
- ER modeling and normalization
- Data model verification
- Distributing database design
Implementation and loading is an additional step. Once the design is completed, this will focus on connecting the DBMS and generating the databases. You will need to pay attention to the security levels and access to the database. This pertains to which your investigation on the organizational structure will return. A system administrator will want to install the DBMS and create a database to be able to take care of security and access to the data. In this instance, there will be no regional managers or local department managers to be able to have access to other department entities. At the same time, a general manager will need to access all sections under his structure. Once DBMS is fully installed, databases are designed. The final step for the system administrator is to load the data.
I hope you all have a wonderful and blessed day!
