Please respond to the following:

You may have noticed that when you look at products on a search engine, that same product appears as an advertisement in your social media and other sites you visit. Many search engines provide advertisers with tools for evaluating the impact of different keywords or phrases. These tools typically “track” user behavior patterns and associate products for sale by companies that subscribe to and pay for their services to help identify potential customers. On the other hand, there are also ad blockers that block this type of communication.

  • What constraints, if any, should be applied to this practice? Do not repeat ideas that have been posted by other students.
  • How might your feelings toward the technology be affected if you are the CIO or an executive manager at a small company that depends on this type of advertising to generate revenue?
  • Be sure to respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts.
  • Tamecia Cameraon wrote Three actions are described. The first is the tracking of consumer behavior, the second is the provision of tools to advertisers that help them track consumers and do product placement, and the third is the use of tracking consumer behavior for placing advertisements.
The constraints broadly are asking the user for permission to track his behavior and allow the placement of advertisements. The user may tick and permit for any of these activities.
From the political perspective, the constraints should be placed by each country. A country may allow tracking of online behavior of its citizens or it may ban such action, the country may allow associate products to be offered through advertisements or it may disallow it. Finally, a country may allow the sales of tools that track user behavior and allow associate products for sale by companies that subscribe to and pay for their services, or the country may prohibit such actions. The constraints if required should be placed by the laws of the country of which the user is the citizen. The laws of the country are formed by the political opinion in the country, the comprehension of privacy in the country, and the opinion of the people. In my opinion, the legal constraint that differs from country to country is most appropriate for this practice.
If I were the CIO or an executive manager at a small company that depends on this type of advertising to generate revenue I would be concerned about any constraint. (a) Any constraint would reduce this type of advertising and reduce the revenue of my company. If I were a CIO or an executive manager, I should know that collecting consumer behavior information and using it for placing advertisements is a violation of privacy and may be considered unethical by many users. If the small company depends on such advertising, the foundation of the business is built on unethical business and its revenues may soon decline.

On one hand, it provides you with ads for items you may use and it keeps some content and sites free to view because the ads pay for them. On the other hand, it is a giant invasion of our privacy. In fact, through ad tracking, a company can build “a surprisingly detailed profile of you” (“The Good”, 1). Even worse, data brokers can collect your online movements and merge it with “anonymized online data with personally identifiable information” (“The Good”, 1) you provided elsewhere to learn more about you than you know about yourself.Constraints should be put on tracking, but it is hard to trace the culprits. It is even worse when you do not know it is happening. The EU is on the right track when it enacted the General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) that bans any company from gathering identifiable data about any EU citizen, regardless of their global location, without their knowledge or permission. As someone who had to assist their company in complying with this law, it is a lot of work and even inadvertent collection could result in large fines. However, like most laws, this one was written for people that obey the laws. Data miners and hackers do not care about the laws, so any constraints, short of banning all ads on the internet, would be pointless. How might your feelings toward the technology be affected if you are the CIO or an executive manager at a small company that depends on this type of advertising to generate revenue? If my company were dependent on ad tracking to generate revenue, I would have a different opinion. By using ad tracking my small business would have a global market instead of a small local market. If I was in a small Wisconsin town in the Northwoods, the local economy may not be able to support my business of artisanal cedar bark placemats. But if I use ad tracking, people in Fiji can be shown ads for my products and it would create additional revenue. Sadly, many small businesses are reliant on ad tracking and would not be able to operate if too many constraints were put in place.Sources:1. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Sides of Data Tracking. When we go to a specific site and that site ask you to accept the cookies for that site, you possibly just added a tracking cookie. This is usually a paid service for advertising. A perfect example is you were on Amazon ordering a product, you don’t purchase the item and head over to check out your facebook page, only to find that product you just searched is in your feed. Its a very common practice for companies to boost sales for their products. Most browsers can be set up to toggle this option off. However, though its a paid service, it will be very hard to not be able to keep this from happening. If it is a nussiance, anti-tracking browser extensions can be used to stop tracking cookies. Also having your cookies and browsing history cleared everytime your log off your browser can go a long way in keeping tracking cookies at bay..

My feelings should be what the CIO or manager should be concerned with. If a consumer was interested in his products he would have purchased his product. Consumers are very smart, and most are very savy shoppiers, so it goes with the territory. If his product was worth the time to be researched, the consumer would be back after researching other similar products to purchase so that cookie would not have been needed. However, online computer shopping is a huge market, and companies will take all avenues neccessary to earn that customer.
