The role of computer software in every field of life has undergone significant change over the last three decades. A huge software industry is positively contributing toward the economies of the developed nations today. Specialized groups of IT professionals including system analysts, software developers, quality engineers, project managers etc. have replaced the lone programmer of an earlier era. Yet, the following questions are asked when modern computer-based systems are developed (same as those asked in lone programmer’s era):

Why does it take so much time to complete the software?

Why is the cost to develop a software so high?

Why is it not possible to discover and fix all the bugs before the software is handed over to the client?

Why to spend so much of time and effort in maintaining the existing software?

Why do we continue to have difficulty in measuring progress as software is being developed and maintained?
