MSCS 615 ECPI University Amazon Web Services Vs Google Cloud Discussion
Data Security
Many IT departments are looking toward web services, such as Amazon Web Services, which offers a broad set of global compute, storage, database, analytics, application, and deployment services. Both small start-up companies and large enterprises trust these web services to power a wide variety of workloads including web and mobile applications, data processing and warehousing, storage, archive, and many others.
Like every other computing platform, cloud computing has to be managed. Choosing the right cloud provider for your company is an important decision. There are numerous cloud computing providers available on the market, and they all offer different services. With so many options available, how will you find a provider that’s right for your company?
Cloud computing globalizes information processing and data storage; however, using the cloud raises legal and other risks, especially in the area of data protection. Fortunately, the Data Protection Act governs data protection in the cloud. Principle 7 and 8 of the Data Protection Act specifically apply to cloud computing in that there must be appropriate security and control of transfer of data abroad.
Assume your Fortune 500 Company (Activision Blizzard) is comparing two cloud providers to narrow down and select one to use for data storage; Amazon Web Services https://aws.amazon.com/ and Google Cloud https://cloud.google.com/. Examine the web services and data protection control of the two providers and summarize your findings, being sure to include responses to the following items in a minimum of two full pages, not including title and reference pages, in a Microsoft Word document:
- Analyze cloud services that are provided by each vendor. Compare the companies and identify which services they offer that are similar.
- Describe the differences between the services they offer (i.e., security and compliance, reliability, technical support, access method, pricing, data locations, company head office, support, SLA, etc.). Which provider would you recommend for your company?
- https://www.cloudflare.com/case-studies/ Explain how web services relate to the cloud. Analyze the web services provided by the provider and identify any that would be beneficial to your company. Explain why these services would benefit your company.
- Examine and describe a minimum of three data protection controls for storing data on the cloud.
- Compare and contrast different services cloud products provide (i.e., analytics, application services, mobile services, customer support). Describe how these services are provided within a security context.
- Evaluate the cloud provider’s data protection controls.
- Upon closer examination of the data protection controls for storage data, explain if you feel one of the controls should be used more often or should not be used at all. Support your opinion with information from your sources when applicable.
