Week 1 Library Assignment: Biodiversity and Conservation

This is the first of four library assignments where you will develop a term paper that discusses biodiversity and conservation. What is biodiversity, and why is it important to life on Earth? Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on Earth. It includes all living things; from plants and animals, to insects, fungi, and bacteria. It is the interaction of living organisms and their related environments that makes life possible in ecosystems. These ecosystems provide valuable services, for example, wetlands cleaning the water by filtering out toxins and preventing flooding. Estuaries provide nurseries for marine life . Forests provide oxygen and remove CO2 from our atmosphere. Without these and many other life forms, our existence would be threatened.
