Boise State University The State of Nevada Questions
I’m working on a economics multi-part question and need an explanation to help me study.
The State of Nevada Legislature is considering implementing a tax on beer across the state. In 2019, the Nevada Alcoholic Beverage Control Board found the average price of beer was $0.42 per ounce with a quantity of 320 million ounces of beer sold. In 2020, beer saw a price drop of 10% per ounce and an increase in quantity to 333 million ounces. The current proposal is to add an excise tax of $0.10 cents per ounce.
For Part A, draw a graph. For Part B, calculate and consider the elasticity. For Part C, use a graph to define DWL.
-
- Will the excise tax reduce the quantity demanded to near 2019 levels?
- Who will be most harmed by these taxes, producers or consumers?
- Will this tax create deadweight loss? What does it mean to have deadweight loss in a market?
