Your paper may take the form of examining a topical thread through the work of one or more photographers associated with a particular type of image, for example, John Thomson, Gordon Parks, Dorothea Lange, Mathias Braschler and Monika Fischer, Sebastiano Tomada, Tim Hetherington, Brent Stirton, etc.
You may want to look more broadly at a theme like how the environment, work, gender, race or class is represented in photography or explore ideas of representation—how does it differ when people are photographed by those outside the community and by those inside the community, by men or by women.
You might explore how photography is used in the aid of scientific exploration. This is a broad theme that needs to be more narrowly focused. So, with the idea of scientific exploration in mind, you might decide to look at how photography was used by NASA to map the moon in order to find the best location for the astronauts to land on the moon or how the astronauts used photography to document their surface explorations of the moon.

- Choose a topic you are passionate about or intrigues you or explore one of the topical threads of the course mentioned above. Conduct preliminary research that enables you to define a research question based upon one of these areas. All papers need to be specific; bring into the discussion specific images and the work of individual photographers, even if that work has been done by the most famous photographer of all—Anonymous. Start with a topic, move to an idea and settle on a research question. Explore an idea that excites you.
- The text portion of your paper should be between 1,250 and 1,500 words, excluding endnotes and the pictures you reference in your paper. This is often between 5 and 7 pages double- spaced in 12-point type. The first paragraph should contain the research question you explore. In addition, you should include illustrations, endnotes and a bibliography. Provide full citations for all sources including those found on the Internet. Notes should be placed at the end of the paper.
- You must use at least six credible and substantial sources. Books and journals are a safe bet. Internet sources must be credible and substantial. If you are not certain of the quality of your source material, either don’t use it or consult with me before you write your paper.
Wikipedia, encyclopedias and two and three paragraph statements either in print or on the Internet are not acceptable sources. Use of sources that are not credible or substantial will adversely affect your grade.
