New York University Week 9 Obtaining Professionalism Discussion

Professionalism

Obtaining professionalism is very important because it shows one’s true characteristics and attitude toward how one may feel about their job, organization, or programs they may be affiliated with. Professionalism demonstrates ethical choices and values along with professional practices that are embedded in public health evaluations that help with planning taking into account the outcome of choices on community stewardship, equity, social justice, and accountability that commit to personal and institutional growth (Galea & Annas, 2016). Moreover, being reliable, transparent, and setting high expectations, caring for others, and carrying oneself in a way where respect is given and returned help build strong trusting teams inside and outside of a public health setting.

After taking the Covey 4 Cores of Credibility Personal Assessment, I have learned that I have high personal credibility. I demonstrate character and competence; I understand what I value and put it into action in my day-to-day life activities. In addition, I care about people, am aware of capabilities, develop, and implement them efficiently to create positive outcomes.

Three long term goals I will strive to achieve over the next 3 years will include:

  • Learn to build trust within my organization and with my leadership team – I find that in most circumstances individuals that I come across tell “white lies” to either make themselves look good and even lead with lies because they do not want to get involved with politics at work or are just afraid of admitting they really do not know what is going on. So instead of being honest, individuals will lie. The funny thing is I know when someone is lying to me. I just get exhausted trying to fight every battle in proving individuals wrong.
  • Continue to get results in ways that inspire trust – Many of my colleagues come to me instead of leadership when they want the facts because I am not afraid to speak up and find the real answers even if it requires writing Human Resources.
  • Valuing my team members by practicing accountability, keeping commitments, and having their best interest in mind in decision-making.

Three short term goals will include:

  • Change career positions after graduation
  • Join advocacy boards in my township
  • Improve my school/work-life balance
