Developing a Culture of Evidence-Based Practice

Nurses stand at the forefront of patient care (i.e., they are first to see each patient in the line of care); as such, we play an essential role in the implementation and delivery of quality care through evidence-based practice (EBP) (Sharplin et al., 2019). Also, according to Lhachimi et al. (2016), taking an evidence-based approach in the course of public health increase the likelihood of numerous direct and indirect benefits to the practice involving access to the highest level of information on best practice, successful prevention programs, and policies utilizing efficient private and public resources. As we have already established the importance of evidence-based practice within the nursing profession and public health, it is also crucial to know that successful implementation is dependent on effective dissemination and communication among clinicians  (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018). Dissemination of evidence-based practice allows nurses and other clinicians to maximize new and existing skills into practice and, therefore, contribute to better patient outcomes.

Strategies for disseminating Evidence-Based Practice (EBP)

One disseminating method to present evidence-based practice I am most inclined to use is through round table presentation/talk. This method caters to a more intimate group number, allowing individuals to share specific information at an informal level and, most importantly, facilitates the involvement of each individual (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018). Besides, a round table presentation helps to reduce the translation gap that prevents efficient dissemination because it engages all stakeholders in the plan of implementation and its evaluation (Brownson et al., 2018).

Another dissemination strategy I am inclined to utilize is the poster presentation strategy; this method is versatile. There are many types to use (i.e., display, laptop, electronic poster presentation, etc.). Also, it uses a more informal style than that of the podium presentation. It allows for an alternative way of providing information of the highest quality of evidence to a professional audience (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018). On the other hand, the least inclined strategy I would use is the podium presentation.  The podium presentation method, in my opinion, is quite limiting. It is formal in both style and format in delivering evidence-based information, limiting presentation time and the opportunity for the audience to ask questions (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018).

Barriers encountered when using disseminating strategies and how to overcome them

General barriers healthcare organizations encounter when implementing/disseminating evidence-based strategies may include a lack of knowledge and skills in high-reliability healthcare organizations and evidence-based practice levels. Also, lack of organizational/administrative support, and a lack of mentorship, to name a few (Melnyk, 2012). To overcome and mitigate barriers to disseminating EBP will need to be addressed both at the individual and health care system level. Therefore, one must provide knowledge and skills to high-reliability healthcare organizations and evidence-based practice levels and, most importantly, seek mentorship in persons skilled in high-reliability healthcare organizations and evidence-based practice concepts (Melnyk, 2012).
