A community leader is someone who knows the different populations that make up the community, takes the time to learn more about them, is passionate about helping them, and takes initiative to plan and implement new programs and interventions. According to the Community Tool Box (n.d.), a community leader is someone who “takes responsibility for the well-being and improvement of their communities.” Some examples of types of community leaders in public health include those like citizens who speak up about specific issues like pollution impacting air quality, a group of people who protest to fight for change like banning cigarettes in certain places, someone who organizes events, programs, or projects like flu shot clinics and blood pressure education, or someone who leads a group of people in a community and professional setting. I would consider my practicum preceptor, who is the Greeley-Evans Weld County School District 6 Wellness Coordinator, a community leader. Some characteristics of effective community leadership that my preceptor practices are having the drive to improve the well-being of district staff and students, an extensive background of education and experience to contribute, and the initiative to take action to continuously find the best ways to better the district’s health. She also showcases integrity, courage, commitment, ability to care for others, and creativity and flexibility (Community Tool Box, n.d.). As a public health professional, I strive to also develop these community leadership characteristics.
