NYU Integrated Behavioral Health Care Team Discussion Response

PEER #1 TERRANCE

The goals of integrated behavioral health care team is to focus on the responsibility of providing viable patient care that will target specific health concerns. Some the benefits of encouraging integration are models that hold providers accountable for controlling overall costs and demonstration programs that are led by Medicaid and Medicare (Klein, S. & Hotsetter, M., 2014). Effective communication is essential for sharing progression details toward patient outcomes. The disadvantages that can be recognize is the lack of time, training, and staff resources that is needed to identify and treat behavioral health conditions. The various circumstances that are happening in society, various people are reluctant to attain the help they need to treat their disability and it goes unheard which increases the difficulty of recovering. “If we are going to look to develop a high-performing health care system that deals with the totality of medical costs ignoring mental health and substance use as drives of costs and human suffering will not work. These illnesses are too big to ignore and too important.” Paul Summergrad, M.D., American Psychiatric Association President.

PEER #2 JAMAL

Integrated behavioral health care serves as a gateway for individuals to have the ability to have the option of collaborative care. Its main goal is to provide practices that involve the complete or holistic care of the individual. Instead of looking at the chief complaint or the specific reason that brought the individual in for care, all aspects (physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual) of the individual are carefully assessed as it connects to that main concern of the individual. One other goal that is associated with Integrated behavioral health care or IBHC is the convenience factor it brings to different communities or individuals who may not have the means to have access to the services that IBHC offers separately. Take into consideration rural communities where there may only be one clinic. If this clinic practices in integrated health, its community members don’t have to worry about seeking other medical or mental health services. This allows for advantages such as cost effectiveness, and accessibility to a wider range of services. One barrier that is embedded in integrated behavioral health care and its convivence concept of being a one-stop shop is that the quality of care is subsidized by the different sectors of integrated healthcare. Instead of 100% of resources being used for the services of just mental health, funds are divided up making services, technology, and research limited (Boone, 2000.)

PEER #3 CAROLYN

The goal of intergrated health care is to help keep cost down and to help a patients maintain the best health they possibly can. When you have an intergrated health system in place it is more effective to have a patient use preventative care, that is what the whole intergrated system is (Conrad & Shortell 1996). When you have this in place and a plan for the patient there are more people involved. You have your BHP who works right on the front line with the patient. This BHP will update and document all information on the patients daily activities and physical being. When any change takes place whether it be physical or mental contacting the doctor and by getting the patient care would save time, money, and costly emergency room visits. I don’t believe there is a disadvantage in this. I believe that intergrated systems are the same as managed care. I have had managed care. I had a team of people to care for my needs. I got really sick in 1997. I made several trips to the emergency room and after that my doctor put in place helpers and therapists. It saved money from costly emergency room visits and my health and mental health was able to stabilize with better direct care and care that was more personal. Intergrated care is a patient focused idea that saves money and can give the patient a overall better outcome with their physical and mental health.
