NSG 456 UOPX Wk 4 Evidenced Based Practice and Critical Decision Making Discussion

Let’s talk a little about a particular type of research that nurses may be involved with. One method is mixed methods. We looked at quantitative and qualitative in your assignments last week – so this is a mixture of those. “Mixed methods research is the type of research in which a researcher or team of researchers combines elements of qualitative and quantitative research approaches (e.?g., use of qualitative and quantitative viewpoints, data collection, analysis, inference techniques) for the broad purposes of breadth and depth of understanding and corroboration.” Mixed methods research or as it is sometimes referred to as MM, is really a sibling of multimethod research approach where both quantitative and qualitative approaches are used and combined for richer more informative results.

A mixed methods design usually has several base elements which are emphasized. These include the identification of the purpose of having both types of data collection and analysis, a theoretical initiative should be explained, timing discussed for each element, the point of integration of the methods/data collection and analysis, and the degree of difficulty that this mixed method poses and does it affect feasibility. It certainly complicates data collection and the pros really need to outweigh the cons.

What would be a good example where you think this type of design would best fit?
