Electrical Gradient Across the Membrane Speech Therapy Discussion

I’m working on a speech therapy question and need an explanation to help me learn.

  1. What are the distributions of Na+, Cl-, K+, and Ca2+ inside versus outside of the neuron? For each type of ion, describe what direction its concentration gradient propels it to flow in as well as what the effect of the electrical gradient across the membrane has for that ion based on its charge.
  2. Create a detailed flowchart that describes the phases and all the steps involved in creating a single action potential event from beginning to end. Begin your flowchart with the process of neural integration (i.e., summation) and end with its effect on a receiving neuron.
  3. Compare EPSPs and IPSPs. What causes these different potentials and what effects do they have on the neuron?
  4. Select one step in the process of neural signaling and describe what consequences a breakdown in that step would have for neural function and consequently human behavior (the effect on behavior can be speculative).
