Utah State University Wk 5 Personal Theory Development Discussion

Discussion Prompt

Use the theory that you developed in week two.  Improve it by using the information you have obtained in the intervening weeks.  Use the Conceptual – Theoretical – Empirical Model (CTE) to link the operational definitions with the empirical indicators with the theoretical concepts and the conceptual model components.  Post your revised theory and explain how you would measure the concepts and proposition in a research study.

Personal Theory  Tunneled catheters tubes are inserted invasively to assist, secure, and enhance the longevity of the peripherally inserted central catheter. Hence, it allows blood transfusions, intravenous fluids, chemotherapy, and medicinal drugs in the body. The tube enhances the ability of the catheters to introduce the required substances to a patient to help in the medication process of the diagnosed disease (Earhart, 2014). The tubes effectively enhance the ability of drug infusion in the body when a patient is in critical condition, and the actions of the drugs are required immediately to ensure their conditions do not worsen due to the delayed effects of the medication. The tubes have implantable devices which are effective in bathing within the restriction of a person under medication. Therefore, tunnel catheters help infusion substances into the human body that facilitate the medication process. The concepts are tunnel catheters and infusion of substances in the human body.  A surgical unit nurse may have a peripherally inserted central catheter tube for medication when drugs are needed to be transfused directly to the blood of their patient. The nurse will be undertaking this process because there is no access to the blood vessels. The catheter is the only available option for the surgical nurse to ensure that they can put the patient under medication to overcome their illness (Earhart, 2014). Hence, the nurse uses the catheter depending on the medical procedure prescribed by the physician attending to the patient. The use of the catheters comes after the diagnosis, which informs the physician to recommend the medical procedure after evaluating the patient and conducting imaging to assess the size of the vein. Therefore, the process forms the theory of providing optimal care for patients using central catheters to have easy access to the patient’s blood vessels.

And in case you need it for reference, this was the assignment for week two: Week 2: Discussion Question 2 – Personal TheoryDiscussion PromptChoose a clinical situation in your specialty and create a theory from your observations. Report the theory to the class. Use a form that clearly identifies your concepts and proposition such as; “psychosocial development (Concept A) progresses through (Proposition) stages (Concept B)”. Identify and define the concepts involved and the proposition between them. For example, a surgical unit nurse may have observed that elevating the head of the bed for an abdominal surgery patient (Concept A) reduces (Proposition) complaints of pain (Concept B). The concepts are the head of the bed and pain. The proposition is that changing one will decrease the other. Raising the head of the bed decreases pain. Use current literature to define your concepts. Each concept should have at least two supporting references.
