Student 1:
Hi everyone,
I work as the coordinator for the Sterile Processing Department at one of the largest hospitals in Montana. The example shown in the video is pretty relevant to my life right now. My supervisor is planning on retiring at the end of next year and has been training me to take over for her. This is the main reason that I am in this program.
An area where I could reduce my circle of concern is that I am worried about my reception by other leaders in the hospital if I get the supervisor position. Getting this position would make me the youngest department head in the hospital. Covid also put me at a disadvantage because I was not able to attend leadership meetings with my supervisor last year so that I could get to know other department heads and get my face out there. I have had other jobs where my ideas were discounted due to my age and hope that this won’t be the case.
While it is important to be ready to deal with these concerns and to be prepared for my interview, it is much more important to be working on my circle of influence with the people I see every day. Since being put into the coordinator role I have tried to foster good relationships with the OR staff, vendors, folks from procurement, and others who I will rely on in my day to day work.
While the people who will be my direct reports already know that I am a hard worker, the department has not seen many major changes in a long time. I am trying to prepare them for the changes that I want to make by researching and implementing small changes to improve our processes. It is my hope that when they see how these small changes improve our work and make things safer for our patients they will be more willing to get on board with larger changes in the future.
Student 2:
Hi class,
I live in Idaho and love it. I have lived in many states, but always seems to come home. I am a dental assistant with an assiociates in American Sign Language Interpreting. I am working on getting my masters in Health Care Administration. I do not know what I will do with the degree. I love my job and those I work with.
- What are some things in your Circle of Concern you should be spending less time on?
Some of my Circle of Concern I should be spending less time on are others people opinion, gas prices, traffic and past decisions.
I can get caught up in the past mistakes I have made and wish I would of went to school when I was younger. I also waste time on what people think of me. I wish I didn’t, but I am working on it. I have gotten ride of social media and spend more time with my true friends who love me for me.
- What are some things in your Circle of Influence you should focus on more?
Some of my Circle of Influence I should focus on more is my attitude with those I work with, who I surround myself with, and what I buy. I have been focusing on making sure my attitude at work is bringing a postive atomosphere. No ones likes to work with a grinch, and I want to make sure my co-workers enjoy coming to work. We recently had an employee change and it was interesting that we felt so much better after the change. We have a wonderful work atomosphere and we want to keep it.
- How can this change of focus make your Circle of Influence grow?
My Circle of Influence has already started to grow at work. With a simple smile in the morning and asking what they did fun that evening. Not only will a good atomosphere affect those I work with, but the patients will be able to pick up on the good vibes and we can help them feel more comfortable in the office.
Below is a ways to grow you circle of influence. I really liked the ideas given. Taking small and simple steps I can accomplish more.
