American Indians/Alaska Natives experience the highest rates of suicide in Arizona. According to America’s Health Rankings, 2021, American Indians/Alaska Natives have the highest suicide rates at 34.1 per 100,000. Using the Participant Observation technique, the public health nurse would observe possible communication, cultural competence, and health literacy barriers contributing to the rise in suicide rates among the American Indians/Alaska Natives. Every culture has different definitions of health, and a public health nurse would have to distinguish the differences in each culture. The public health nurse should develop cultural competence by becoming more culturally aware of biases and beliefs.
