Grand Canyon University Health Outcomes Discussion

I’m working on a nursing discussion question and need support to help me learn.

Health outcomes can be impacted by language and literacy. According to Healthy People 2030, (2021), research indicates that limited language skills and low literacy skills are associated with lower educational attainment and worse health outcomes. In the United States, limited English proficiency can be a barrier to accessing healthcare and other services, along with understanding health information (Health.gov). Social conditions are associated with negative health outcomes and can often be accompanied by co-existing and multiple health conditions (Showstack et al., 2019). Patients who face language difficulties in health care settings may also experience socio-economic disparities and participate in diverse cultural practices related to health and illness (Showstack et al., 2019). Providing information in ways that people can understand is an important part of reducing health disparities (NIH.gov). Professional medical interpreters are associated with decreased health disparities for patients with limited English proficiency, improved patient comprehension, fewer medical errors, and greater patient and clinician satisfaction compared to use of ad hoc interpreters, such as family members or bilingual staff (Espinoza, 2021).
