KIN 190 Coastline Community College the Weight Debate Discussion

In this module we explored the homeostatic control of the cardiovascular system. When you think of ways to improve or maintain a healthy heart, cardiovascular exercise often comes to mind. It is true that walking, running, or participating in cardiovascular activities can improve your circulation and overall heart health. But, is cardio the only or best route? There have been longstanding disagreements regarding role of weight training on heart health. Conflicting information about weightlifting is as easy to come by at the gym as tank tops and spandex. For years, people with hypertension have been warned to stay away from lifting weights because it could further increase blood pressure. Weight training during pregnancy has also raised eyebrows and been thought harmful largely because of cardiovascular demand. But what does the research say?

Discussion Directions:

Initial Post: (400 word minimum)

For this post, you are going to “debunk the junk” related to weight training. Identify a “myth” or previous assumption regarding one of the following topics:

  • a type of training that was once thought to be contraindicated for a specific population but has since been dispelled.
  • a population recommended or contraindication that is not backed by research
  • a training trend that is not consistent with the research.

After choosing one of the above, you’re going to head to the research.

  1. Discuss the basis (or genesis) of this “myth”/misinformation.
  2. Provide evidence from the research dispelling this myth. Support your response with a minimum of 2 reputable (research-based) journal articles from the research. (This can be a meta-analysis article or original research article. Check out this source on types of articles if you are unsure.)
  3. Conclude with a take home message this information can integrate clinical best practices in working with the identified population/clients/patients.
  4. Provide APA citations at the end for your 2 journal articles in case others want to view the articles!

Response Post:

After you type your initial post, then read through the other entries and reply directly to at least two classmates (50 word per response) regarding something that caught your attention from the topic or article they chose. When you reply, ALWAYS type the name of the classmate you are responding to, and your name at the bottom of the message. Make sure to use professional grammar and punctuation in this college level course in all correspondence. Please avoid “text” or “twitter speak” when corresponding.

Click on REPLY when you are prepared to submit your response to the topic.
