Hello class,

According to our textbook, “future immigration may be one factor that affects the supply of health care professionals” (Shi & Singh, 2019). This shows that immigration has a large effect on the supply but also the demand of health care staffing.

In the countries that lose health care staff to immigration there is a higher demand to supply ratio for health care professionals, and even in the United States where we receive an increase of health care professionals from other countries, we are also belabored as a system by immigration from other countries of non-health care professionals who use up these services.

When it comes to immigrating to the United States, there is no comparison to the financial compensation that is given to health care professionals compared to most developing countries. Most doctors makes above 100k yearly salary, with generous benefits provided by their employers. H1B Visas and work Visas are more readily available for immigrants if they demonstrate significant skill or work in a high demand low supply occupation, and this with the addition of the desire to escape a lower quality of life or more oppressive government drive healthcare professionals to America.

Those who immigrate also come for the higher quality of care and perceived higher standard of medicine. Despite that deaths due to medical complications are up there on the list of causes of death annually, many come seeking free health care as hospitals in many countries do not function as they do in America where they provide emergency care without cost if the person is not able to afford it.

The United States is a very wealthy and prosperous nation. What we consider to be poor is still by historical standards fairly wealthy in this world and to generations past. Our own nation has some of the greatest advancements available, and by law will not turn away any emergency care needed, and the information is readily available about how to take good care of your own health with the press of a button online. The reasons I would discourage U.S Aid to foreign lands for healthcare is not based on a lack of desire to help others, but rather for an overstretched U.S budget that needs to be rectified with its debt. If the United States could give of its surplus instead of further indebting the people of America then it might be a different story, in addition to the consent of the people.
