Grand Canyon University Instrumental Role that Religion Plays Discussion Response 1

Respond to the following as a peer, Religion plays a vital part of many people’s life. Spirituality implies that there is a purpose and meaning to life: spirituality generally refers to faith in a higher being (Pozgar, 2019, p107). Illness and injury can be very frightening to many especially when admitted in the hospital. Many health care organizations have Chaplain(s) available to provide emotional and spiritual support. It is well-proven fact that patients who are able to draw on their spirituality and religious beliefs tend to have more comfortable and often improved healing experience (Pozgar, 2019, p107)

However, sometimes religious belief and code of conducts have confliction with ethical responsibility for healthcare providers to perform their duty in order to save patient’s life. One example is Jehovah’s Witness won’t accept a blood transfusion because they believe it is a sin. A principal tenet of the Jehovah’s Witness faith is the belief that receiving blood of blood products into one’s body precludes resurrection and everlasting life after death (Pozgar, 2019, p115).

Another example is Islamic belief which present challenges to health-care delivery through a preference for same-sex providers, which may link to poorer preventative health care seeking (Padela et al 2018). Muslims believe that God ultimately decides one’s health and illness as well as provide cures for his followers.
