Which learning theories and principles do you think are most useful to the advanced practice nurse (APN) in providing high-quality health care to clients, and why?
Based on the dynamic nature of the current healthcare system and structure, it is important for healthcare professionals to regularly apply clear reasoning, principles, and theories in health promotion projects and programs, continuing education, management, educational activities, staff training, and patient interactions. The learning theories that are most useful to the APNs in the provision of high-quality care to the clients are psychodynamic theory, behaviorist theory, humanistic theory, and cognitive theory (Ouadoud et al., 2017).
In the 20th Century, the commonly used learning theories were behaviorist theory and cognitive theory. Following the evolution and great changes in the healthcare systems, the cognitive theory is the most applied in the 21st century. It is used in nursing practice and academic research, especially in education and psychology. Each theory focuses and reflects on different learning perspectives (Ouadoud et al., 2017). APNs are RNs who have gone through advanced clinical training and education to offer acute and preventive healthcare to people of different populations and age brackets.
Nurses play vital roles in designing and implementing procedures that are used in health training and promotion. Considering the four learning theories, the most that useful and effective learning theories in the provision of high-quality patient care are the gestalt perspective and cognitive theory. There is adequate evidence concerning the application and effectiveness of cognitive theory in advanced nursing education settings. The theory integrates various factors that influence the process of learning in an individual. Such factors including developmental changes, thinking patterns, perceptions, memory, and information processing (Aryadoust, 2019).
Gestalt theory emphasizes the importance of attention, sensory perception, and an individual’s creativity in organizing experiences and information. One of the principles of the cognitive theory that can be applied in the improvement of the quality of care by APNs is a person’s previous experiences and his or her way of perceiving and processing information (Ouadoud et al., 2017). This helps in the reflection of the person’s learning situation and his or her cognition level. The principle also enhances understanding of the individual’s motivation in relation to his or her expectations and goals.
Individuals with goals and high expectations tend to be more motivated. The desire to accomplish their goals and fulfill their expectations will compel them to learn and take appropriate actions of enhancing learning. I believe that cognitive theory is useful since it focuses on the things that run across the learner’s mind. The learning theory can be used by APNs to offer extensive education to patients based on their healthcare condition or chronic illness. The APNs must consider the patient’s perception of the illness and the new information to properly present the right information during education. Cognitive theory encourages the recognition and appreciation of diversity and individuality concerning people’s process experiences and learning (Aryadoust, 2019). Gestalt theory applies the principles of regularity, simplicity, and equilibrium in the delivery of information to patients. The principles can be used by APNs to offer a detailed explanation to the patient concerning a disease.
