New York University Wk 9 Confidentiality as an Ethical Concern in Research Discussion

Description

I think a common one that sometimes we take for granted is confidentiality. I say this because many times, when we have others in a room with us, or at least in my experience, I don’t see doctors asking if it is ok to talk about someone’s health or health issues with everyone in the room. I think this is an important ethical concern because it has to do with the individuals’ rights to privacy that involve ethical issues in the use of health information systems (Tulchinsky, 2018). Examples of this could be birth, death, birth defects, neurological conditions, hospitalization data, etc. (Tulchinsky, 2018). In my case, it would be to know the information of the residence, for example, what rooms they live in, how old they are, what their first and last name is, and more. This has a lot to do with a lot of people’s cultures as well. For example, in a lot of Hispanic cultures, your parents always come in with you, or someone always comes in with you no matter what. There are times, for example, when I go to the doctor’s office, my mother insists on coming with me, and as much as I don’t want her to know this information, she still ends up hearing it. This is something that has been very important with my practicum as everything that I talked about with the patients was behind closed doors with just them, and I asked her permission to talk about their results with others.

The second one I would choose is respecting people’s human rights. Respecting people’s human rights has to do with the protection of a human’s life and health as well as their well-being (Tulchinsky, 2018). It also has to do with liberty, privacy, and protection from harm for the individual (Tulchinsky, 2018). I think many times people insist and pry in order to get people to participate in something like an experiment because they need the participant’s qualifications or they need to meet a certain amount of people, or they just need a body to increase or decrease their statistics. In my opinion, if someone does not want to do something, they should have the right not to, no matter how much you ask them to. I did this with my participants for my pilot in my practicum. I asked all of the residents who would be willing to meet with me and who would be willing to talk about the pocket talkers with me every time I saw them. A majority of them said that they were willing to, but there were a few who wanted to keep their lives private, and I respect that, which is why I did not choose them to be the pilot.

The last ethical concern I would choose has to do with scientific integrity. I chose this one because scientific integrity has to do with the publication of peer review journals being essential in order to establish advanced evidence that is based on a public health practice (Tulchinsky, 2018). I think this is important because if the information is false and why publicize it. A good example of this is everything that we have been seen in the news since COVID-19 started. There are things that I’ve been on the news that are just not true, and people truly think that it is how they can cure the virus. The same thing goes for publicized peer-reviewed journals. In the future, if I were to publicly have a peer-reviewed journal out in the world are I cannot see myself giving false information solely for the fact that it is not true, and I would not only feel guilty about it, but other people would be reading it and believing what they’re seeing.
