“An evidence-based approach involves an ongoing, critical review of research literature to determine what information is credible, and what policies and practices would be most effective given the best available evidence” (NIC, n.d.). The goal of evidence-based practice is to provide the highest quality care while being the most cost-efficient. Evidence-based maternity care and birth are policies and procedures based on proven scientific evidence from medical research and peer-reviewed journals such as at least an hour of skin-to-skin between mother and baby after birth, delaying baby bath, rooming-in mother-baby practice, and breastfeeding. Our unit is a Baby-Friendly Hospital initiative, meaning it is now aimed at improving the care of pregnant women, mothers, and newborns at health facilities that provide maternity services for protecting, promoting, and supporting breastfeeding.
