Northern Virginia Community College Nutrition Juice Label Worksheet

Purpose

There are two major classifications of carbohydrates:  sugars and starches. The issue with simple sugars is we consume too many of them as added sugars in soft drinks, cakes, cookies, candies and desserts. These simple sugars add kcalories to the diet without many nutrients associated with them (low nutrient dense foods).  This exercise will help you identify major sources of sugars in beverages by reading product ingredient lists and interpreting the Nutrition Facts Panel.  The natural sugar in fruits is good; the high fructose corn syrup or sugar or honey added to other beverages in not desirable. Here you will compare a fruit drink with a fruit juice and determine which is a healthier chose for you.

Directions

Purchase a fruit drink (less than 100% juice) and a 100% fruit juice.

Compare the two products and their nutrient content by completing the juice comparison worksheet  download. Be sure to compare equal serving sizes which is usually 8 fl ounces.
