Hi everyone!

Before starting and expanding a venture, an entrepreneur needs to identify opportunities for domestic and/or international expansion (Hisrich et al., 2017). International entrepreneurship is the process of an entrepreneur conducting business activities across national boundaries (Hisrich et al., 2017). The healthcare product that I think would be marketable would be cost-effective prosthetics that can withstand extreme wear and tear, especially for developing countries within Africa. In the developing world, land mine injuries, factory accidents, and other health risks claim the limbs and livelihood of survivors, and the rate of amputations is constantly increasing in these countries (Tobin, 2014). The components of Western prosthetics cannot stand up against the amount of wear and tear endured in rural environments and the cost is astronomically too expensive for families. Due to the economic structure and culture of these countries. I believe for these developing countries, a durable, inexpensive, comfortable prosthetic would be marketable.

Hisrich et al. (2017) define intellectual property as patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets, all of which represent important assets to the entrepreneur. To ensure that intellectual property and other legal issues are addressed when introducing this new product to market, I would first hire a lawyer. A good working relationship with a lawyer will ease some of the risks in starting a new business and will give an entrepreneur the necessary confidence (Hisrich et al., 2017). I would also hire a patent attorney to ensure that there will not be any possibility of patent infringement (Hisrich et al., 2017). I would also purchase insurance to protect this new product in the event that problems do occur, especially casualty insurance because it covers the costs of defense and judgments obtained against the company resulting from bodily injury (Hisrich et al., 2017). What other steps could I take to ensure legal issues are addressed? I look forward to everyone’s feedback!

Describe a healthcare product and/or service that you think would be marketable in an international market of your choice.

First, I wanted to discuss international entrepreneurship, which “is the process of an entrepreneur conducting business activities across national boundaries” (Hisrich et al., 2017, p.125). Conducting your business model in more than one country is considered international entrepreneurship (Hisrich et al., 2017). A healthcare product I think would be internationally marketable is orthotics. A lot of my friends and family have recently shared their discomfort regarding their feet—this is common with most everyone, but for some reason, this is really big with my social circle right now. Having foreign parents and a foreign partner, I am well aware that this is not a national concern, but an international one—especially being diagnosed with plantar fasciitis. Most of my family is diagnosed with this, and I come from a European/Asian background. Layering that with my friends who are from other parts of the world (and the US), it is a safe assumption that most of the world struggles with this condition, one way or another.

Though there are many orthotics already out there, I could easily compete with their product, simply because patients are always looking for new products to try in this portion of healthcare. I have a friend who has spent hundreds of dollars on orthotics over the last year, and my roommate has tried several inserts in the past month—all from different companies. Finding the right one for you is difficult, and requires the trial-and-error method to find the best fit.

How would you go about ensuring that intellectual property and other legal issues are addressed when introducing this product into the selected market?

This international market is mostly impacted economically (versus politically or socially). Per the textbook, some of the important factors to consider in an economic environment include taxation and trade, monetary policy, distribution, and trends (Hisrich et al., 2017). However, there is still a legal component to products. For the simplicity of this post, I’ll use one product in an “orthotic line:” inserts for arch support. In this case, I would think regulations are in order for the material(s) made to create the insert, the labeling used to market the insert, and the packaging for it. Some of the other political determinants include conflict between government and policymaking (Hisrich et al., 2017). With this in mind, it is best to consider the political standing with another country before creating an international business model with them—even for something like orthotics. This will ensure the most financial reward.

Hi everyone!

  1. What types of information/evidence should be collected to build the case for an EMR system implementation? Where would this evidence be found?

Geneva Health System (GHS) is a large hospital with an excellent reputation but is lacking in technology, especially an electronic health record (EHR) and electronic medical record (EMR) system. Dr. Johnson is facing pushback to the idea of EMR implementation so he needs to build a case to support it. To do this, evidence-based research should be collected on the benefits and risks of EMR systems. Supporting his idea for implementation with solid evidence can give hospital staff the confidence needed to move forward with the EMR system at GHS. Using journal databases to search for scholarly articles would be the best way to collect evidence to build Dr. Johnson’s case. For example, one study found that 78 percent of physicians reported EMR to use enhanced patient care overall, 65 percent reported EMRs alerted them to a potential medication error, and 62 percent reported EMRs alerted for critical lab values (King et al., 2013). Using evidence like this from the scholarly articles will help GHS staff to make a more informed decision about the implementation.

What could be learned from speaking with other hospitals and health systems about their experiences with EMR implementation? With whom would you speak with at these organizations?

By speaking with other hospitals and health systems about their experiences with EMR implementation, GHS can learn the successes and failures of implementation. Other hospitals can tell Geneva what worked best during implementation, and what did not work during implementation. Though each hospital operates differently, it would give GHS a baseline for implementation to ensure that the transition is as smooth as possible. GHS staff could also learn more about the process involved in EMR and see the system in action. Because the implementation would affect the entire organization in one way or another, it would be crucial to speak with hospital staff at all levels who are involved with the EMR system, from the CEO down to staff in medical records, to gather information on individualized knowledge. Do you think these personal experiences could help make GHS staff feel more comfortable with the transition?

How would you engage Ms. Chapman, the medical records manager, to encourage her to embrace a new EMR system?

Ms. Chapman – are you aware that the federal government implemented an act titled “The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act of 2009 (HITECH). It required all healthcare facilities to use a “Certified Electronic Health Record.”

For Geneva Hospital to qualify for federal incentive funds, care providers had to adopt EHRs and demonstrate meaningful use of certified EHRs. By not having an EHR system in place, the availability to receive incentive payments may not be available to the hospital. You may have cost the hospital an opportunity to have the federal government help pay for the cost of a Medical Record system.

If there were to be a HIPAA Audit of the medical records, enforcement action could be brought against Geneva Hospital. The consequence of the new $1.5 million maximum fine should bring the physicians to take more notice of HIPAA regulations. The HHS was given the authority to determine the level of knowledge that HIPAA Rules were being violated and whether the violations constituted willful neglect.

What types of information/evidence should be collected to build the case for an EMR system implementation? Where would this evidence be found?

An implementation plan will primarily consist of assessing existing institutional workflows for each department. Then define the needs and preferences of the organization to have an EHR for the hospital to function.

EHRs provide a means of organizational efficiency and provide a safer way to care for patients and the required means to meet regulatory standards. The implementation process is an important step to consider when adopting an EHR in healthcare organizations. Selecting and including the appropriate strategy can facilitate success and minimize delays in the system rollout. Becoming familiarized with the approach and understanding the organization’s needs are detrimental steps to the success of the implementation. Using the best method, strategy, backup system, and training increases healthcare workers’ satisfaction and exponentially decreases the chance of usability being compromised.
