Objectives: 

Assistants must do more than simply perform procedures correctly. They must interact with patients and help them feel comfortable. They must also interact appropriately with coworkers and supervisors. How can a new assistant learn these skills that are not always taught in courses or in employee handbooks? 

In this discussion you will act as an experienced assistant who is mentoring a new coworker. You will write some tips and suggestions for the new employee. 

Unit 3 Assignment:

For your assignment, write tips and suggestions for a new assistant who has been assigned to job-shadow with you during the first half of your shift. Include sections with tips in the following areas: 

Interacting with patients during procedures, such as when to make small talk and when to stay quiet, ideas about things to talk about with a patient, and warnings about things that are not a good idea to discuss with patients—for example, politics and religion may be issues to avoid. 

Interacting with colleagues, such as what is and is not appropriate to discuss with colleagues—for example, making derogatory remarks about a supervisor or another co-worker is not recommended. 

Interacting with supervisors, such as what to report to a supervisor, when to report it, and when or how to ask for help.
